The frothy, cream colored head leaves behind nice sheets of thick lacing. Smells of sweet brown sugar, toasted caramel, biscuit, and hazelnuts hint at a dessert-like brew. At first, the flavor shows the same nutty, fruity, sweet caramel profile, but there is a surprisingly decent amount of hop bitterness to cut through the sweetness and help balance things out. The finish is nutty and pleasant, though fleeting. Medium body that is smooth and incredibly easy to drink. Another very nice brew from Sam Smiths. FrankJohansen (3367), Århus-Randers Crew, Denmark
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 20, 2007 Bottle. Dark amber colour with a huge mostly lasting beige head. Rich aroma and taste of malts, caramel and nuts. NIce mouthfeel. wcampbell (576), Central, South Carolina, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 19, 2007 Good for the style, but not that great overall. Sweet and smooth caramel malt flavor. Not watery at all. Easily drinkable but boring flavor. ChristianScheffel (4481), Odense, Denmark
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 19, 2007 Dark amber with a small off-white head. Light malty and nutty aroma. Rich, mostly dry nut flavour, I especially noted walnut and a resinous tinge of beech nut as mentioned on the bottle. Best traditional brown ale. haggis03a3 (135), Piedmont, California, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 2/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 19, 2007 I think I may have had an old bottle. Very little aroma even though it was fairly warm. Clear dark amber, with a rapidly diminishing to nothing head. Light flavor without much nuttiness I was hoping for. Some sweet caramel malt and a little bitterness. Smooth, but carbonated palate. Dry finish that was sort of harsh. Just OK. mkofron (155), St. Louis, Missouri, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 18, 2007 My first brown ale that I was recently reintroduced to at a local pub. Nutty and smooth. Hard to beat for this style. radagast83 (1289), Fairfax, Virginia, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 17, 2007 Bottle. It’s been a while but here we go. The aroma was very nutty and had a strong caramel tone to it. The Flavor was suprisingly smooth, with a nice roasted malt and a slight tinge of coffee. trokini (1027), San Diego, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 16, 2007 Dark brown with a squatty tan head. Nutty and malty aroma with some toast. Lighter than expected mouthfeel. Roasted malt, hazelnuts, pecans, and coffee in the taste. The crystal malt is detectable in the back. Pretty good.
