Total cheap booze aroma, something like Becks or Heineken. Gee, I wonder why. Skunked, anyone? The clear bottle will do that. Decent enough tasting, if not bland and boring and a bit minerally, slight hazelnuttiness and roast. Yuck.

The aroma is malty, with hints of nuts and molasses. The head is off-white to light brown, mostly diminishing with good lacing. The flavor is watery toffee, molasses and a little nutty. The palate has a bite in the middle of the tongue. Not bad, a decent ale.

(Bottle, Cittie of York, Holborn, London 25 April 2007) Dark brown colour with firm beige head. Malty, nutty nose with notes of caramel and toffee. Malty, nutty taste with notes of hazelnut, chocolate, fudge and a rather dry nutty finish. Nice balance with modest notes of hops in the background. Much the archetype for a nut brown ale.

Nice appearance, thick and persistent head (if you get this in a bottle, beware, because it fizzes like all-get-out!). Aroma is simply heavenly, with strong molasses overtone and some burnt hints. Taste does not quite match the aroma, but I did let the bottle sit for a bit before drinking. The flavor is very good, malty with a touch of bitterness and also a hint of sweetness. Thick, smooth, it is a delight to drink.

Pours a clear brown with a small head. Flavor is malts and roasted nuts. Mild bitter aftertaste. Feels a little viscous in the mouth. Very drinkable.

Bottle. Fox and Hound, Overland Park, Kansas. Pour is lighter brown, with a smallish off white head. Aroma is nutty and sweet roasted malt. The taste is primarily the malt and a nice bitter finish. Nice body. An excellent Brown Ale, certainly the standard setter.
