joohefner (380), Isla Vista, California, USA May 7, 2007 light aroma of toffee and nutty earth with a little citrus. color is a light mahogany with a thin light brown head. thin body and fairly carbonated. has a watery toffee nut taste with some molasses and just a hing of lemon. mild earthy bitterness to it. flavors are balanced but thin. overall very mellow puzzl (2579), New York, New York, USA May 6, 2007 Total cheap booze aroma, something like Becks or Heineken. Gee, I wonder why. Skunked, anyone? The clear bottle will do that. Decent enough tasting, if not bland and boring and a bit minerally, slight hazelnuttiness and roast. Yuck. LearninBeer (194), Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA May 5, 2007 The aroma is malty, with hints of nuts and molasses. The head is off-white to light brown, mostly diminishing with good lacing. The flavor is watery toffee, molasses and a little nutty. The palate has a bite in the middle of the tongue. Not bad, a decent ale. Svesse (2597), Hässelby, Sweden May 5, 2007 (Bottle, Cittie of York, Holborn, London 25 April 2007) Dark brown colour with firm beige head. Malty, nutty nose with notes of caramel and toffee. Malty, nutty taste with notes of hazelnut, chocolate, fudge and a rather dry nutty finish. Nice balance with modest notes of hops in the background. Much the archetype for a nut brown ale. Cybercat (778), Georgia, USA May 3, 2007 Nice appearance, thick and persistent head (if you get this in a bottle, beware, because it fizzes like all-get-out!). Aroma is simply heavenly, with strong molasses overtone and some burnt hints. Taste does not quite match the aroma, but I did let the bottle sit for a bit before drinking. The flavor is very good, malty with a touch of bitterness and also a hint of sweetness. Thick, smooth, it is a delight to drink. PattyBoy (302), North Liberty, Iowa, USA May 3, 2007 Pours brown, thin creamy head. Flavor is sweet, nutty, & roasts. Finish is earthy with apples(?). brianbuntz (49), Santa Monica, California, USA May 1, 2007 Pours a clear brown with a small head. Flavor is malts and roasted nuts. Mild bitter aftertaste. Feels a little viscous in the mouth. Very drinkable. theisti (1640), Leawood, Kansas, USA Apr 27, 2007 Bottle. Fox and Hound, Overland Park, Kansas. Pour is lighter brown, with a smallish off white head. Aroma is nutty and sweet roasted malt. The taste is primarily the malt and a nice bitter finish. Nice body. An excellent Brown Ale, certainly the standard setter.
