RoleModlin (23), North Carolina, USA Apr 26, 2007 Updated: Apr 30, 2007Nice brown color, very little head. Sweet nutty flavor with just the slightest bitter aftertaste. Great with pizza. keoki182 (305), West Bend, Wisconsin, USA Apr 25, 2007 Caramel/brown color, very little tan ring around edge of glass on surface of beer. Decent nutty flavor, some other aspects of this flavor strongly remind me of a scotch ale. My main impression of this ale is the thicker mouthfeel of this brown ale. Definitely not your standard Newcastle watery body. Slightly bitter finish considering the malty sweetness of the ale overall. cgarvieuk (4159), Edinburgh, Scotland Apr 24, 2007 Ruby brown in colour, little malt nose, with a full malt mouth feel that leads to a bitter linger. xav33 (313), Midland, MI, Michigan, USA Apr 21, 2007 Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown Ale
550ml bottle
Recent bottling (SG13B1), celebrated 04/07
Medium pour in an English pint
Poured a clear brown with a mostly lasting large fluffy light brown head.
Smelt of moderate mixed nuts, toffee, stone.
Taste was upfront strong bitter nuts and sweet caramel followed by a strong bitter rustic and nutty flavor and light caramel on a moderate finish.
Palate was light to medium bodied, oily, fizzy and moderately astringent.
Overall, this is a classic nut brown with awesome flavor. The flavors are bold, balanced and complex. A personal favorite. Easily one of the best nut brown ales out there. MI2CA (1260), Noblesville, Indiana, USA Apr 19, 2007 22oz - Aroma is nutty, caramel and toffee. Pours transparent brown with a medium head and good lacing. Flavor is a match to aroma. Palate is a little sticky, syrupy and thin. A tasty classic brown ale. dmac (1420), Toms River, New Jersey, USA Apr 15, 2007 Brown Bottle, Kudos to Sam Smith for getting away from the clear bottle and going to brown. Poured a deep dark crystal clear brown with a great looking head that screams out drink me. This beer smelled FRESH, I mean super fresh like the brewery was across the street and they just made it. For some reason it smelled like fresh sliced cucumbers to me but not in a bad way it’s just an aroma I’ve never had in a beer before. This beer tasted FRESH, a nice malt back ground with only a hint of hops. I could drink this all day long . nearbeer (1833), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Apr 15, 2007 Updated: Jun 11, 2007Pours an unclouded, dark brown with red tinges. Large meringue-like head lasts. Aroma is slight (no overpowering hops) sugar cane, mild malt, molasses. Flavor is nicely balanced and mild, picking up some sweeter maltiness in the middle, with a slight hop finish. Very smooth and drinkable; tending towards a medium body, but still refreshing and a nice session beer. Interesting, hopped pecan pie aftertaste. This beer is about the malt and balance; if you are all about hops you won’t like it. jarspag (593), Los Angeles, California, USA Apr 13, 2007 Not a terribly great, nor bad beer. Just ’eh’ . . . wouldn’t be in any hurry to get my palate on this. Prefer their oatmeal stout
