smag4life (17), Groton, Connecticut, USA Mar 17, 2007 Pours a nice, dark reddish brown with a thick off white head that quickly dissipates and hangs out around a finger or so. Slightly hoppy aroma that I really enjoy. Most of the flavor doesn’t come out until the finish, but when it does, man it’s nice. Slightly hoppy with a tasty bitterness. Hazelnut really hangs out on the palate, great beer I think. Habanero (610), Tranbjerg, Denmark Mar 17, 2007 Pours with a huge, tan head and a beautiful red-amber body. Lots of carbonation. Nose of malt and caramel. Rather sweet flavour with a slightly bitter finish. medium bodied. A fine brown ale. robinvboyer (1419), Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, Canada Mar 13, 2007 one of my favorite brown ales. Such a nice aroma, and flavour of hazelnut. great bitterness, and love the english style hop profile, outstanding beer. joshwilfong (769), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Mar 9, 2007 Dark brown appearance with a slight head. I am not a fan of brown ales but this is a solid representation. flavor is one dimensional with a nutty sweet malt flavor that is strong throughout. little hop character. just alright Dynamind69 (29), San Miguel, California, USA Mar 4, 2007 Pours dark amber a bit cloudy with small tan head, medium hops with the classic bitter taste of a Nut Brown Ale.I enjoyed this one.I like Samuel Smith’s Winter Welcome alot better than this ale. This is one of the only bitters I like,I’m not a big fan of them. joe1510 (501), Illinois, USA Mar 3, 2007 550ml. Bottle
The nut brown poured a dark mahogany with ruby highlights when held to the light. A one finger tan creamy head that faded but left a coating. Thick chunky lacing throughout.
There is a ton of different fragrances in here. Let me try and give a couple. I smell chocolate, nut, sweet malts, floral hops, and dough. This beer smells very good. Theres so many different scents.
The taste is a little diffeerent from what I thought i’d be. It starts out with a quick bitterness followed by semi-sweet malt and toasted grain. Followed in the end by a lingering mild bitterness. Tastes good.
Mouthfeel is pretty good. Medium light feel. I’d like it to feel a little heavier and slick. Feels a little watery.
Drinkability is good. Its definately a beer you could sit down and enjoy a few. I don’t think I could drink it all night but for me it’s more because of the style.
Sampled 9/30/06 Heathen (723), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Mar 1, 2007 THOUGHTS: I’m almost caught up on my reviews. I had this one on New Years Day. I still can’t believe SS’s are this good when they come in clear bottles. Nice beer but nothing too special. A little too much metallic aftertaste. I didn’t mind the aftertaste in this one as much as I did in their stouts, but there isn’t enough malt to balance this one out. Without that aftertaste it would have been an incredibly drinkable beer.
TECHNICAL: Poured a clear, dark reddish-brown with a large, off-white head that mostly lasted. The aroma was moderate nutty malt and moderate hops. The initial flavor was lightly to moderately sweet, while the finish was moderately sweet and moderately to heavily bitter with a long duration. The body was light to medium and a little dry up front but oily with fizzy carbonation an slightly metallic finish. rmussman (905), California, USA Feb 28, 2007 Sampled on Halloween. Aroma was very nutty and personified when I poured a pitch dark brown ale with a frothy white head. A nice smooth finish was nice after the head disappears. Flavor is very nice and refreshes with its smooth crisp taste.
