Brewed at Samuel Smith’s small, traditional British brewery with well water (the original well sunk in 1758 is still in use), best barley malt, roasted barley, yeast and aromatic hops. Nut Brown Ale is relatively dry with a rich amber-brown colour and nutty flavour derived exclusively from small amounts of dark malt. Brown ales are a specialty of northern England. Fermented in ’stone Yorkshire squares’.

UPDATED: NOV 7, 2012 Large head and brown color. Smells very nutty and sweet. Taste is malt and nut and other stuff that I can?t nail down. Solid good ale, not crazy, just simple quality brew.

In short: smooth drinkable chocolate beer. Aroma: sweet chocolate, with no roasted sensation, and prunes. Taste: sweet in the perfect measure. Palate: a little chocolate biterness, very creamy.

Bottle 55 cl from Barleywine in Copenhagen. Deep brown red with a very nice beige head. Black currant, raisins, very nice bitterness, nutty, some caramel, . Medium/light body, medium carbonation, bitter finish, dry. Felt a bit thin, could maybe have some more malts to back up the flavours. Otherwise very nice and interesting taste combinations.

Aroma is black currant, nuts, chocolate, honey and raisins. Taste has a short interlude of pears followed up by a moderately bitter nuttiness and raisins. Clear EKG presence in the bitterness. Body is a bit to thin and carbonated. A really good brown ale with ale the malty nuttiness you’d expect. Could have had fuller body though.

Brown bodied, tan head. Biscuit malts, nutty, lager like fermentation, caramel cookies. Light body, soft malt sweetness, not that expressive. Nice but I expected more, a bit too clean. (33cl bottle from Saveur Bière)

Bottle Pours dark brown with an off-white head. Aroma and taste of roasted malt dark chocolate and an underlying slightly earthy dankness Dry palate throughout. Decent brown but I am more of an American brown fan than of the English style browns.

Poured from a pint bottle, into a giant Paulaner dimple stein at around 50 degrees F. A: Poured a clear brown, not unlike watered-down cola, though holding it to sunlight reveals a beautiful bronze red-amber beer. A thick pale head formed with large bubbles, which dissipated somewhat quickly, leaving only a ring around the very edge of the glass. No lacing formed at all in the glass. Plenty of bubbles appear along the bottom of the beer, occasionally shooting upwards as single bubbles rather than streams. S: Toasty caramel malt woven through with a heavy hazelnut / chestnut presence, the nose is primarily sweet and warm. T: Opening with toasted caramel malt with the usual hints of toffee, the flavor opens nicely into a blend of nuttiness, featuring the aforementioned hazelnuts and chestnut. There is a hop presence that also appears, which stays in the background and takes the edge off the malt sweetness. The finish ends quickly, without much lingering aftereffect. M: Sparkling and medium-bodied, this is a lively ale to drink. O: A salute to Tadcaster on an all-around enjoyable brown!
