Even though, I don’t like brown ales this one is a standard example of what it should be all about. Dark leather brown, and tthin layer of head across the glass. Aroma of sweet malts and fresh nuts. Toasted flavor of malt, and roast cooked nuts of pistachio or cashew blended with almonds. Also I sensed a small dose of the alcohol on the inital sip. I enjoyed it all the way to the finish, and think it is in the best beer category for Samuel Smiths catalog. NosirIwont (1186), Aalborg Vestby, Denmark

Sweetish malty aroma – not too overdone. Slight notes of hops and wood. Bitter hoppy flavour with malt in the background. As it warms, it becomes sweeter and more malty, and notes of bread appear. Finish is sweet with a lingering bitterness. Dry. Notes of apple and faint cereal notes. A slight sourness. 30-04-08. carruthm (1185), Seattle, Washington, USA

| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 3/10 | 4/5 | 11/20 | Jun 24, 2005 (550 ml bottle) Pretty biscuit head which produces little to no lacing. Light coppery brown color. Aroma of hops and caramel. The stuff feels great in the mouth, but what happened to the taste? It doesn’t really have any flavor - bummer. Dry finish. Really surprised it doesn’t taste like anything. Goodgrief (1161), Middletown, Delaware, USA

I’ve definitely had bad bottles, but even the good ones have had a grassy/hayesque hop flavor that can be confused with skunk. The flavor is predominantly caramel with some bittering balance. Rich and full, one of the better nut browns, but for the money, I’ll take me a Smutty Old Brown Dog or a Rogue Hazelnut!
