COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed at Samuel Smith’s small, traditional British brewery with well water (the original well sunk in 1758 is still in use), best barley malt, roasted barley, yeast and aromatic hops. Nut Brown Ale is relatively dry with a rich amber-brown colour and nutty flavour derived exclusively from small amounts of dark malt. Brown ales are a specialty of northern England. Fermented in ’stone Yorkshire squares’.

Pours a clear deep brown with an amber hue. Foamy head holds up pretty well. Nose is nutty and rummy. Taste is deep rich caramel malts and a hint of chocolate and almond with a smidgen of cherry cordial. A fantastic offering from Samuel Smiths.

Dark brown color, big off-white head. Caramel aroma, but really weak and mild again. Finish is slightly bitter. Thin body, average carbonation. I’m not amused with this one. And I don’t get why weighted average is so high.

Warka do 05.2014r.

Clear brown color, average sized tan head that quickly disappeared. Medium body, soft carbonation. Aroma of caramel and nuts. Sweet with very little bitterness. OK I guess.

Bottle from greens and part of my adventure of getting through the most rated list. Molasses. Lots of molasses some caramel and a bit of light but flavors. Almond. Finish is a touch sweet and caramel again. Decent but not worth adding to a regular rotation.

Transfer from BA review on 12-10-12- Poured from bottle into pint glass Appearance- Pours a light brown- mahogany color with a big off white head. The head has a great level of retention hanging around for quite some time with it very slowly fading to give a great level of lacing. Smell - The aroma is of a malty and nut aroma. The malty aroma is mostly of a brown bread nature and is complimented well by a caramel and toffee sweetness smell. The nut smell is a nice blend of a walnut and almond aroma which when combined with the sweet smells creates a great nut brown aroma overall. Taste – The taste starts out with some sweet caramel and a malty flavor of a brown bread nature. Nutty flavors of a mostly walnut nature become more and more prevalent as the taste advances. An almost cider like flavor also develops more toward the middle of the taste. This results in a sweetening of the beer, which over time then starts to fade as the caramel and toffee loss some ground. A grassy and earthy hop flavor come to the taste at the end, bittering the taste ever so slightly. With the lessening of some of the sweetness that was originally upfront, a bready, walnut, and lightly grassy hop flavor are left to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is a little on the thinner side with a carbonating level that is on the below average to average side. Not bad, although a little more creaminess and chewiness may have been better for the nut and bready flavors of the brew. Overall- A easy drinking nut brown. Not the smoothest of flavor transitions and a little weak in body, but still one to try if you get a chance.

UPDATED: SEP 7, 2014 Roasted caramel malts and gently sweet fruits, but a little too little of both. Ultimately a bit watery and forgettable.

Tastes fairly similar to Newcastle, but has a stronger, more pronounced flavor and bitterness as well as a nice chocolatey aroma. Still seemed a bit watery on the palate.
