Brewed at Samuel Smith’s small, traditional British brewery with well water (the original well sunk in 1758 is still in use), best barley malt, roasted barley, yeast and aromatic hops. Nut Brown Ale is relatively dry with a rich amber-brown colour and nutty flavour derived exclusively from small amounts of dark malt. Brown ales are a specialty of northern England. Fermented in ’stone Yorkshire squares’.

Pours a clear amber brown. Head is large, recedes to a thin sheet of fine bubbles. Smells of yeast, clay and toffee. Taste is well balanced, spicy, biscuit, toffee, pepper. High quality. Bitter dark roasted coffee ends it. Drank from 550ml bottle purchased at Wegman’s, at the Wolf Trap.

From 2011 notes: When I first tried this beer about 20 years ago, I thought it was probably the best beer I had ever had. (I was probably right). Having one for the first time since joining BA, I had high hopes but some anticipation that it could be disappointing - I’ve tried a lot of beers over the past 2 decades. Well, it was not at all disappointing. Perhaps not the very best brown ale I’ve ever had, but excellent, upholding its reputation as a gold standard of English browns. Plenty of caramel malt in the aroma. Tastes only slight nutty at first, but a more notable nuttiness in the excellent malty finish. Perfect balance of flavors. Slightly fruity. Mouthfeel - a tad thin; otherwise excellent, with perfect carbonation. O - outstanding example of style. Refined and superbly crafted.

550 ml bottle. Pours clear copper with a light brown head. The aroma is moderatly malty - bread and roasted malt together with some grassy hoppiness and also a little yeasty. Pleasant creamy mouthfeel with soft to lively carbonation. The flavor starts light sweet with some fruity acidity and a bitterness that becomes more pronounced towards the finish. Roasted malt with some caramel and nuts and mild coffee in the aftertaste - all aromas a little hidden. Overall not too exciting but a nice brew.

Gyönyörű mahagóni szín, közepes, nem túl tartós hab. Illata édeskés, aszalt gyümölcsös, diós. Íze édeskés, karamelles, pici kakaóval és aszalt gyümölcsökkel. Icipici keserű, alacsony karbonáció, közepes test, jó összhang.

330ml bottle at home. A classic for every occasion. Nice brown colour with little foam with a bready and very biscuity aroma. Some caramel and maybe some chocolate. Quite thick mouthfeel. Flavour is quite complex, very biscuity and lots of caramel, chocolate and a hint of herbal hops. Great classic.
