4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: SEP 22, 2011 Bottle. The pour was a rich medium to dark brown with a translucent red hue and had an average sized (1-2 finger) light brown foamy head that had decent retention and produced some nice lacing.
The aroma was that of a roasted caramel malt and a leathery yeast with notes of coffee, dark chocolate and molasses.
It tasted very malty and mildly sweet with a hint of chocolate at first and finished with a slightly bitter coffee flavor that stayed with you for a nice long while after the swallow.
Its mouthfeel was tremendous, smooth and creamy in texture and a solid medium in body with a very soft carbonation.
Overall a superb Nut Brown ale, one of the best I have ever tried. But then again most brews from this brewer are just awesome!!

Pours brown and leaves the same colored body that gives a spectacular one finger foamy off white head. Some nice spotty foamy lacing is observed. The body is too dark for any carbonation to be seen rising; the aroma has a fair amount of nuts, caramel malts up front, hops slightly in the background; the flavor is exactly the same; its fairly easy on the palate with a good creaminess all around; overall well worthy to come back to

From 22oz bottle to shaker. Pour is a deep brown, thick off white head. Nose is alcohol, nut, roasted malt. Taste is medium to heavy bodied, sour with hop bitterness balancing it out. Little thicker texture as well, finishes very crisp. Samuel Smith never disappoints.

5% bottle from Rakuten served in a pint glass. Slightly reddish-brown pour with a light beige head & a sweet caramel & molasses aroma. The beer is medium bodied with a zesty carbonation & a sweet syrupy flavor that gives you caramel, maple, molasses & some nutty notes in the finish. Pretty good, a cut above the average English ales Iíve had in Japan.

1.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20
Dark brown with a foamy white head. Maybe it was shelved too long, but I didnít find much of a flavor here. Has a watery feel as well. Not very memorable.

Clear, copper colour with medium and quickly disappearing head. Moderate aroma of malts, caramel and nuts. Taste is sweet with caramel, resin and nutty note. Over carbonated. Thin body. Medium sweet finish. Nothing special.

550 mL bottle. Pours crystal clear, medium brown with a tight tan head. Aromas of almond, apple sauce, toffee, cocoa, and earthy hop. A hint of sweetness back by good hop bitterness. Moderate body with low to moderate carbonation. Palate coating. Getís better as it warms, solid.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Usual 550ml Bottle: BBD Apr 14, poured into an Abbot Ale glass tankard at home on 17th Nov 13.
Looks impressive: clear body of redwood (teak/mahogany), a deep blanket of beige foam sits on top, nothing moves as you stare at the glass, apart from carbonation bubbles rising through the body. One of those moments to savour.
The nose is dry, as is the taste: malts rule the roost here, nutty (obviously by the name) and slightly over roasted in smell and flavouring.
This is a fine beer and Iím glad I found it after years of not having any since my youth. An old school Brown with nothing fancy or clever about it, just good ingredients and blended well, then left alone to sort itís self out.

Malty and nutty as advertised, but nice dry bitter finish. Gets better as it warms up in the glass.
