COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800ís, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Black color. Very thick full cascading “G” type head. Aroma is roasted malts and chocolates. A nice silky smooth. Medium bodied sweet stout. Mild malts and hops. A very flavorful beer. Nice chocolate and coffee flavor. Well balanced. Just wish it were in a brown bottle. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter and a touch dry. What a sweet stout should be

Damn fine beer!! This has the full flavors that make beer worth drinking. It has better a cleaner creamy finish that comes unexpectedly after that full bodied flavor as well. You can taste a hint of coffee among the complex roasts, but nothing overpowers ... just tastes great.

I really do not get the smell form this brew as I do with other Oatmeal Stouts. It lack that, and the taste is good but cannoot amke up for the missing strong smell present in most oatmeal stouts. A good smell gets the mind and the mouth going in antisipation of the beer taste to come.

Itís good, but not that good!. Has something like a aroma as sherry, which is found again in the taste. But I didnít find it so good a combination for a beer.

UPDATED: JAN 24, 2003 (need re-rate, preferably draft) Very good sweet stout. Beautiful appearence; deep ruby color with a frothy, lacy head. Not highly effervescent. Very complex, and mostly appealing aroma: Roasted malted grains (perhaps this is the 'oatmeal'), hops, caramel, chocolate. But, I also smelled URINE! I did buy it from Safeway, and it does have a clear bottle, but I didn't think 'skunky' meant 'pissy'. Hmmm. I dock a couple "aroma" points. I found the flavor pleasant, very well balanced, but not particularly complex. A thick, flat sweetness is balanced well with hop acidity and some other source of subtle sourness. Lightly astringent.

Wonít rate it as high as some have. Iíve read someone noting a bacon aftertaste at one tasting but not at another. Could be a sign of age (itís age, not mine) but I noticed it too and that mitigates my score. I suppose though, that with its low ABV, I cold have half a bottle with my eggs in the morning.

I hate to do it, but I must admit that this beer is in fact the best stout Iíve ever had. The first time I had it it was a little skunky from the idiotic clear bottle, but since then itís been sublime. If you know me then you know I have a hard on for Rogue Shakespeare Stout, but this is better. Just so incredibly smooth and creamy, with a perfect balance of roastiness, chocolate, coffee, sugar, plum and grape in flavor and texture. Oh God, itís so good...

Deep and rich chestnut to near black in color with a breathtaking amber head. Slight wine-like aroma with a slight scent of oats as well. Smooth mouthfeel, akin to a fine Port with flavors of plum and raisins that finish quite dry on the palate.

Very very tasty, the best Sam Smith beer by far, and Iím not even a big stout fan!
