Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800ís, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

They need to lose the clear bottle. Mine started with a lot of vinegar in the nose and taste, but improved a bit as it warmed. I was expecting something spectacular, but, quite frankly, this particular bottle wasnít any better than Youngís Oatmeal Stout in the nitro cans, so Iím rating accordingly. Hopefully Iíll be able to get a fresher bottle soon. Iíve had good luck with SSís other (clear bottle) products, so this was a surprise. RE-RATE: St. Pattieís Day 2002. Gave this one another shot, in light of the praise it receives here. Still full of vinegar, not creamy, and not particularly impressive. I went with the smaller bottle this time, hoping that something was wrong with the (large) bottle I tried before. I just donít get what everyone sees in this one. (6/15/02) Still trying to like this one. First sip is soy sauce, but after that Iím getting some chocolate. Better than before, but not a religious experience. Out of respect to the consensus, Iíll add a few points. Closing the book on this beer, it has not been kind to me, but perhaps Iíll revisit it in a year or two. 7/13/02: Another bottle, another rerate. I left this one in the fridge entirely too long, but nonetheless it has been a better experience than the previous bottles. Smooth chocolate and coffee with none of the off flavors described in my previous ratings. At last, a good fresh bottle!

Nice aroma, decent flavor. Not too thin, with a slightly bitter aftertaste.

A real disappointment. Wanted something with some strengh to it (as you might expect in a stout), but it was very watery.

Now were talking OATMEAL STOUT. Deep dark opaque brown with just a bit of a reddish hue. Tan head was on the thin side but leaves a very nice lacing down the glass. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, caramel and much more that I canít adequately describe. Silky smooth mouthfeel and finishes with just enough bitterness to make it enjoyable. This is THE oatmeal stout to which all others should be compared! Great beer.

Very smooth, almost sweet flavor. Chocolate and roasted qualities stick out. Nice thick mouthfeel. Quite enjoyable.

The best English oatmeal stout I have tasted. Very smooth and roasty tasting with just enough bite. Not oily tasting like alot of English oatmeal stouts. Delicous!

UPDATED: FEB 10, 2003 Wonderful stout! Black with a reddish tint/hue. Tastes like some bittersweet chocolate with maybe molasses or coffee in it. Recommended with a creamy or chocolate dessert.

UPDATED: DEC 30, 2010 Re-ReRate Dark black pour - nice khaki head, faint chocolaty aroma. Nice black dirt earthiness wit a hint of bittersweet chocolate. Solid - but not 4.4 worthy. Original 4.5 Re rate: Ordered at a pizza restaurant because they had it listed as íSam Adamsí Oatmeal (not heard of that) - oh well - still the same - Smooth, choclatey after taste, nice thick creamy head. Definitely one of the better stouts I have tasted - especially one so easily obtainable. Noticed the sweet aroma as well. Same score.
