3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: DEC 1, 2004 I love this brewery. Smooth dark beverage. Surprisingly good chocolate head that quickly disappears. Chocolate and smoke and everything good for a stout.

4.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
UPDATED: JUN 3, 2003 Poured out of bottle, bought at Sam's Wine & Spirits in Chicago, 12/10/02. Deep, dark dark brown beer with a slight, murky brown cream head. The head forms in what I can only describe as small glops along the surface and on the edges of the glass, and it quickly gives off a wonderful malty cocoa (almost nutty) aroma. A very nice flavor of cocoa and malt, this one is a very easy drink for a stout, but does not lose any of the richness of flavor to make it so. It's just very tasty and feels wonderful going down. The finish is perhaps a little too bitter (like with some dark chocolates), but that mostly just makes me want to take another gulp to get rid of it! I This is one of the better stouts I've had, and I'll surely try some more.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: FEB 2, 2008 Nearly black. Great high head that clings to the glass in clumps. Velvety smooooooth, barely carbonated body, goes down like chocolate milk. Perfectly balanced mocha flavors. Nice subtley hoppy finish. Unfortonately my experience with this stuff has been inconsistent, but at its best, this is great beer.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Very thick head produced when the beer is poured. The beer is a very smooth drink, with a cocoa and malty aroma, and a coffee and bitter flavour. The beer is only let down by a slightly sweet tang after the beer is swallowed. A great beer nonetheless.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
A grainy coffee goodness floats in a fragrant cloud above the glass. The deep dark blackness of this beer reveals no secrets. An everlasting lacy head dribbles and etches down the side of the glass and lingers patiently on the surface. The taste is initially pure butterscotch and chocolate, then just a hint of hops hits you up the middle. The end is just a smooth fade away. This is a classic. Watch out for skunked samples, the bottle probably doesn’t travel well. Stick to well cared for bottles.

This is one way my mother never told me I could get my oatmeal! Silky so smooth!! Poured and looked like cola. Wonderful! And as a side note do not eat a hungarian salami sandwich with it because it makes it taste like fish and it takes awhile to get the flavour out.

While most of Sam Smiths beers are a bit of a disapointment this one always seems to be just fine. Good solid balance of Mocha and creamy oats. Not the biggest or baddest, but a very pleasant brew.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
This beer has a deservedly good reputation. Silky sweetness is apparent from the first sip. Of the easy-to-get beers, this one also happens to be one of the best.
