4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
I never understood the concept of ísilkyí in a beer until I tried this one. The body is jet black, and is topped by a minimal mocha head. Rich coffee and wine(!) aroma. The flavor is a combination of mocha, malt, butter, mild chocolate, wine, and sweetness. The bitterness comes to the fore as you swallow. A delicious concoction -- this beer is one of the reasons Samuel Smith has such a great reputation.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Rich, heady, Italian coffee aroma and a strong, smoky flavor. The flavor is remiscent of smoked meat, but itís not at all unpleasant. I donít tend to like beers that have smoky flavors, but this one is so smooth and rich, rather than jarring, that I enjoy it quite a lot. Itís balanced by a gentle sweetness, and it has a slightly malty finish. A pretty complex and interesting beer.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: DEC 28, 2005 Time for a rerate. After looking at my top fifty there were a few brews that I thought might deserve/need a rerate and this is the first one. Near black color with a moderate, but lasting head of tan bubbles, lots of lace coat the glass. Dark fruit, prunes, lavender and mild pinot noir aroma. Silky and smooth in feel, perhaps a touch thin in the finish. Quite dry and with come dark berries and charcoal. A great brew, just not a top 50 anymore.
29 April 2002: (9,5,9,5,19 - 4.7)Just the silky feel you want from an oatmeal stout. Couple that with the floral/sherry aromas and dark/burnt fruit flavors its hard to resist.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: SEP 26, 2006 Almost black, average light brown head. Full aroma with mellow hints of chocolate, coffee, and smoke.Starts of a little thin but then the roastiness shows along with a vinous quality. The middle is silky smooth, oaty with a hint of smoke and coffee. Damn tasty and enjoyable. Better everytime I have it. And the fact its been around so long and still holds up. Impressive and a classic.

Very Dark, about 98% of light doesnít pass though the glass. the aroma is light but pleasent. The taste is like pleasently like oats. hops are noticable and aftertaste lasts a while.
The taste is a bit strong for me, but I do think I am begining to like it more.
