Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800ís, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

UPDATED: JUL 19, 2006 Clear bottles are an insult to good beer. WHy donít they switch to brown bottles like they do with the lager and IPA? This beer however, when found fresh, the other reviews say it all. Silky mouthfeel that numbs the tongue, yet very crisp. What a concept! Addictive buttery aroma of oats and molasses. A very unique bitter finish. Winey, oaty, bubblegum and a sheer joy to drink. Never has a beer eluded all other styles in its class as does this.

I found an old bottle of this in the kitchen yesterday and drank it today, expecting that it had gone bad, what with the clear glass and all. If this is what itís like when itís gone bad, I want some more! Very pronounced malt taste, just short of being too sweet, not much head (maybe this is where it showed its age?). Overall, very nice. Iíll get another one soon and give it a fair test. RE-RATE: A fresher (and larger) bottle this time, not as flat, but head does go away too quickly. Still, nice body, coffee notes nicely balanced by sweetness and hints of fruit. Iíd love to have this on tap some day.

UPDATED: SEP 2, 2003 Becoming more and more of a fan of the dark brew. Non-existent head but tremendous aroma and finish. Not something that I could handle more than one of in a sitting.

Fruity/chocolaty. No discernible hop, but thatís OK for the style.

I love this stuff! In fact, this is the beer that got me interested in trying real beers in the first place. Smooth, creamy, roasty, sweetish, and VERY satisfying stout. Goes great with English pot-pies and meat-loaf. Iíve never seen it anywhere íon tapí but would really like to try it that way! I also like the Nut Brown they make a lot.

This beer is the bomb, the diggity dank. In fact if Bud hadnít stolen the sloagan í king of beersí Iíd crown this jewel of a beer with that title. My only problem with this beer is you simply canít drink 4-5 of these in one night.

To start off...I liked this very much. The Aroma is nice roasted character to it. It was very smooth with a íweirdí (in a good way) slight bitter bite in the finish (suprised me for how smooth it was to start). Excellent Oatmeal Stout....worth the money to try it out.
