Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Now this is what Oatmeal Stout should me, malty, grainy and a bit of sweet. Not like that nasty, salty Ipswich junk.

Everyone I know likes this beer. I liked it so much that I bought an Oatmeal Stout T-shirt! Typically Samuel Smith-ian character all-around (which is to say excellent!)

Good smooth stout. Great color and maltyness. Needs to be served on tap in more bars and resturants.

A good stout, but as long as they make Guinness, I won’t be buying Samuel Smith’s.

By far one of my favorite all tiem beers. This stuff is smooth as silk. The aroma is complex, rich and just incredible. The flavor takes my tongue on a ride it never soon forgets. This is the stout against which all other sweet stouts should be judged.

UPDATED: JUN 26, 2004 Very dark brown, thin light tan head; aroma like the finest Belgian chocolate mixed with Atholl Brose. I want to fall into the glass. Silky body, fruity notes of cherry, redcurrant add an interesting layer to the silky malts and chocolate overtones. Sweet, luscious finish. One of those beers that leaves you at a loss for words. The classic oatmeal stout - depth without compromising stylistic adherence.

Maybe not the best beer in the world but it is good. Nice and sweet

A good stout, but I don’t care for the amount of carbonation. Sort of like a stale soda. But, my bottom line is this is no match for Guinness, which in my humble opinion is the true King of Beers. Just confirmed what I already knew, no one makes a better stout than the Irish!
