COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

UPDATED: JAN 3, 2008 Update to my previous rating (which was nothing at all): black color, modest charcoal head with beautiful lacing around the glass, sweet nose with notes of toasted oats, licrorice & a touch of brandy, medium body, very smooth, flavors of sweet malts, licrorice, toasted oats & a hint of cream, smooth finish with a little bit of a bitter bite, an excellent oatmeal stout

The bitter/burnt flavor grows on one; however, the mouthfeel doesn’t work for me - it seems thin and syrupy, as a couple of others have said. Having drunk this beer a couple of times, I am considerably less impressed with it than the majority of raters are.

UPDATED: NOV 21, 2006 550ml clear bottle: Pours a dark ruby brown with a thin tan head, aroma has rich dark fruity malts, thin bodied with light carbonation, with an odd fruity ending. Put it in BROWN bottles!!!!!
