Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Opaque black, dense tan head. Thick, grainy aroma. Grainy again on the palate with plenty of dark roast malts. A nice taste of dark coffee, full creamy body, hints of anise and raison. Sweet and bitter finish. Pleasantly surprised that it’s more roasty/bitter and less creamy than expected.

0.55 bottle. Very dark brown color and a medium, tanned head leaving a nice lacing. Aroma of malts, wet bread, some semi-sweet rolls with crust, dough, and delicate but sweet yeasts. Taste is delicate, sweet, malty, oats, sweet rolls again. Full body, creamy texture, and almost flat carbonation. Finish introduces some roast and a hint of fruits. Overall the beer is not bad but I certainly do not see why it would deserve such high an average score.

Poured into a tumbler in late 2013. A: 3 finger head. Motor oil. It looks beautiful! S: Absolutely delicious smell! Chocolate, caramel. Oat sweetness. T: Milk chocolate. Oatmeal. Balanced. Not too sweet. Raisin when warm. M: Creamy smooth, velvety. O: This is truly a world class beer. It’s incredibly balanced. There is nothing that I would change about it.

Bottle. Dark brown pour with a tan head. Dark roasted malt aromas. Dark roasts malts dominate with hunts of licorice. Smooth and creamy from the oatmeal. Good body with a decent mouthfeel. Feels bigger than a 5%er.

Color is dark black, no light getting through. Has a creamy light brown head, very little lacing. Aroma is chocolate malts, sweet, sugary, some molasses and a hint of licorice. Taste is creamy, sweet caramel, chocolate and a tiny bit of bitterness on the back. Subtle but big. Mouth feel is excellent. One of the best readily available oatmeal stouts around.

550 ml bottle. Pours a clear dark brownish black with lasting dark tan head and ample lacing. Aroma is overall sweet: roasted malt, oats, caramel and toffee. Flavor is same, with oat sweetness balancing the roast character. Thin to medium bodied, moderate carbonation, sweet malty finish.

Bottle from pack; Christmas gift. A: Pure black with a foamy creme head. N: Substantial cocoa and char. Biscuit, licorice, minerality, iron like it’s from artesian water, oatmeal, coffee. T: Bittersweet and smokey. M: Creamy medium - light body, soft carbonation, no alcohol. O: This brings back so many memories of college and moving to Smith’s from Guinness. Has that same iron - like acidity that is either pleasant or off-putting. I am in the former category.
