Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

550 ml bottle. Aroma a little sweet with slight caramel, a little earthy slight coffee from the roast. Appearance jet black with a medium creamy tan head that hangs on for a while. Well balanced sweetness up front that dries out just enough in the finish. Some chocolate notes. Slight bit of fruit in the after taste. Mouthfeel is full and silky. A very pleasurable beer that is easy drink several pints of.

550 ml bottle. Pours a dark brown almost black colour with a medium, long lasting brown head. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate and a hint of licorice. Sweet flavour of dark fruit, roasted malt, chocolate and coffee with a bittersweet finish. Medium body with a silky smooth, oily texture and soft carbonation. A very nice sweet stout.

Although it is not my favorite style, the thickness and cereal palate since the first sip reminds me of its fine quality.

Pours a dark black with a tan head. Aroma is toasty but with a very odd sickly sweet smell that I can't put my finger on. It is a bit off putting. Taste is roast malt, hints of chocolate. Mouthfeel is smooth and silky.

Really earthy one with some milky moments, cereals and some malt. Drinkable, maybe a bit thick but also quite watery. Good one.

Pours out of the bottle in a deep black colour with steady low ehad and medium body. Aroma of torf and malt. Taste of torf, earth, leaves, woods, chocolate and mild coffee. Light dusty and roasty / smokey hints. Not a bad one.

Aromas of a scotch ale? Yeah I know that's weird, especially for a O.S. ... bb Nov 14 l13240. head retention around the rim, it has a high sweetness, low carbonation. Smooth but water mouth feel. It doesn't help being shipped from England to Australia, I'm drinking at room temp of 17 degrees. I'm not really satisfied. -- rated via 'Find A Beer' for Blackberry 10

Tömör és világos bézs színű habja rátelepszik a sötét főzetre, melyből intenzív, pörkölt gabonás illat árad némi vaníliás beütéssel. Ez a visszafogott, süteményes édesség ízében is megjelenik, és kiegészül egyfajta égetett cukros, karamellás jelleggel, mely mintegy ellensúlyként szolgál az erőteljes, stoutos karakterhez.

Pours a very nice dark brown with tan head. Oats, spice, roasted malt, and some chocolate on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with a nice roasted character.

550 ml bottle to a tulip. Opaque black with 2 finger creamy tan head and a bit of lacing. Some sweet roasted maltiness and toffee notes. Excellent mouth feel, smooth, well balanced. The original modern oatmeal stout sets a high standard. Would like to try a coffee version... Like "Mother's milk"!!!

550ml bottle from Sendiks in Brookfield served at refrigerator temperature. Pours dark brown with reddish highlights and a bit of a foamy tan head. Aroma has caramel, molasses, some chocolate, licorice and a touch of smoke. Later after it warmed, the chocolate became more of a player, and the molasses less. Taste is sweet caramelly malts, bakers chocolate, some roast and some anise. Quite dry and actually light-ish, once it was closer to British temperature. Finishes sweetly with some roasty bitterness. Perhaps a bit thin. Solid offerning.
