Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800ís, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

A very drinkable stout. Quite smooth and balanced. Easily quaffable and actually quite refreshing. Barely any aroma to speak of which is normal for this type of beer. Flavors are roasted malt predominately with hints Of chocolate. Body is not as full as other oatmeal stouts. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

550ml bottle at Beer Station, Xiamen. Pours black with a thin off white head. Aroma of chocolate. Medium bitter finish. Not as good as I remember it from before, maybe a little too cold.

This is easily one of the best oatmeal stouts I have had in some time. Silky smooth and not too dry, it finishes perfectly. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours dark brown almost black ruby highlights fluffy tan head. Aroma is bitter chocolate, some coffee and some blackberry like esters. Flavor has lots of berry like fruit, some dark chocolate flavors. Balanced towards the sweet side however some ashy roast balances things out.

Bottle. Very dark, chestnut brown. Thin, sticky, tan head. Chocolate. Caramel. Some bonfire toffee. Heavy on the sweet. Light on the roast. Taste is dry, and a little bitter. A bit of sweet wriggles in. Palate is a little watery. Finishes dry, with a tang of tartness.

Pours almost pitch black with an outstanding head, lacing and retention. Subtle nose of dark fruit (plum, raisin) with light notes of roast and chocolate as it warms. Light bodied with little texture. Normal carbonation with a bit of effervescence on the finish. The flavor profile is laid back. It consists of a blend of light roast and chocolate with a distinct mineral note. If you look for it, you can find the oat character. The finish has a slight metallic twang to it. I suspect this bottle may be old, since what Iím tasting is nothing like the other reviews here. If you donít bother to bottle date, then the reviewer canít take age into consideration.

Aroma of roasted malt and slight sweetness. Taste is a very smooth roasted malt with a bit of chocolate and a slight sweet, very smooth finish. Not as sweet as some milk stouts, but has that smoothness. And this one is just very balanced and all around good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
