COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

16.9 oz bottle pours black with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee and a hint of chocolate. Taste is pretty much the same.

AROMA: slight note of puke (it pursue me today), nothing else, poorly ;( ; APPEARANCE: black opaque/ ruby and clear under intensive light, very very rich, wonderful, but quite quickly dropping small-and-medium-bubble beige head, delightful lacing; TASTE:indeed sweet, low bitterness, note of sourness, malt, little roastiness, very little chocolate; PALATE: medium carbonation, also medium body, sweet-and-sour finish; OVERALL: totally normal sweet stout, I was a bit loaded while sampling , so take amendment on it; BEER’S EXPIRATION DATE: dec 2014 ANOTHER NUMBER: L13269

Reviewed from notes. The appearance was an exceptionally dark brown colored body that yields a foamy brown three finger head that lasted for most of the beer. A beautiful spider web lacing clung to the sides of the glass. The body was too dark for any carbonation to be seen rising. The smell had some chocolate up front and very strong. Once it warmed a bit some caramels and nuts came out. The taste brought back the chocolate but it seemed it was more combined with the other flavors of caramel, nuts and some light toffee as well. On the palate, it sat at/about a heavy with a dry finish and left nothing harsh on my tongue. This is not a sessionable beer despite the low ABV. Overall, I thought this was a very good beer and am glad it was as heavy as it was. This would make an exceptional dessert beer and also go well in my wife’s special chocolate cupcakes that she makes with stouts.

Almost black with some reddish glares, fine creamy beige head. Roasted malts aroma, some coffee, delicate oat touch in the mouth with toasted flavors and coffee again. Good, quite dry finish.

Very good. Sweeter. Not like the new high-tech stouts. Lower ABV 5.0 and very drinkable. A good choice when you want a full-bodied beer that won’t knock you out. A classic

Bottle from blacker Hall farm. Quite disappointed, Sam Smith usually fairly high quality. malty aroma. Dark brown with a reasonable head. Slightly smoky flavour with some fruity bitterness.

Pours opaque black with a tan head. Lacing is quite thick and head retains fairly well. Aroma is roasted licorice, dark malt, and coffee. Flavor is very sweet in a roasty kind of way. I taste roasted malt and thats about all I can pinpoint. Its actually very, very smooth, sweet, and flavorful. Body is medium-full. Highly recommended.

Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is malt, roastiness, coffee, chocolate and oats. Taste is medium to high sweet leading to a moderate roasty finish. Sparkling mouth feel. Pretty good.
