Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Nice midnight dark beer with a head that you could take a nap on. Full of flavor, the changes from your first sip to several seconds after. Wonderful complex beer will drink it many more times.

Aroma: Raisins, dates, sweet rolls, vanilla, caramel, cocoa, toffee, oats, yeast, cinnamon, char, malt. Appearance: Pours pitch black. Thick, creamy, coffee colored, two finger head that disappeared evenly. Taste: Raisins, dates, sweet rolls, cocoa. Roasted, fruity, oatmealy. Smokey. Slightest bit of alcohol. Medium body with light carbonation. Sweet finish. Complex. Palate: Sweet, silky, smooth. Overall: I poured this 550 mL bottle into a glass in which I like to drink beer. Too sweet to be a desert beer, unless you were eating a unsweetened chocolate cake. Would go really well with something salty. Not a beer I would drink often. RateBeer member Mep3222 summed it well, "Not as sweet as some milk stouts, but has that smoothness. And this one is just very balanced and all around good." #respectbeerbrethren

Pours a very dark, almost black with some ruby and a small creamy tan head. The aroma is very sweet, slight oak. The taste is oatmeal, some spices, oaky, roasted malts, and a burnt caramel aftertaste.

Geruch ist reichhaltig, s, schokoladig, malzig. Der Geschmack ist super: sehr rund und ausgewogen mit viel Bitterschokolade und etwas Kaffee. Hafer schmeckt man nur wenig raus.

0.55 bottle. Very dark brown color and a medium, tanned head leaving a nice lacing. Aroma of malts, wet bread, some semi-sweet rolls with crust, dough, and delicate but sweet yeasts. Taste is delicate, sweet, malty, oats, sweet rolls again. Full body, creamy texture, and almost flat carbonation. Finish introduces some roast and a hint of fruits. Overall the beer is not bad but I certainly do not see why it would deserve such high an average score.

Poured into a tumbler in late 2013. A: 3 finger head. Motor oil. It looks beautiful! S: Absolutely delicious smell! Chocolate, caramel. Oat sweetness. T: Milk chocolate. Oatmeal. Balanced. Not too sweet. Raisin when warm. M: Creamy smooth, velvety. O: This is truly a world class beer. Its incredibly balanced. There is nothing that I would change about it.
