Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

This was the first Stout I had ever drank. Guess I started out the best. Caramel and nut flavors and very creamy. YUM!

Black as midnight, sweet as the morning dew. Very good stuff here. Nice stout flavor, subtle oatmeal sweetness balance this out perfectly, not too thick, and goes down quite easily. This is one to try if your not too fond of traditional bitter stouts, yet are a bit curious about the darker beers. Deeelicious!!!!

35.5cl bottle from Willow Bend Liquors (Tampa, FL). Pours a dark brown to black with a massive, pillowy and foamy tan head that settles slowly and gracefully laces the glass. Aroma is sweet and malty with notes of maple syrup, honey, toffee, and maybe just faint hints of coffee. Flavor has much stronger roasted malt and coffee notes with fainter hints of caramel, honey and toffee. Some ripe dark fruit notes as well. Generally medium to full-bodied with a sweet malt and slightly bitter coffee finish.

An easy drinker here, but if you were expecting a big beer, you’ll be disappointed. Basically a Guinness with a little anise, licorice, and chestnut flavors thrown in. Good, but nothing special.

Poured a dark brownish black. Thick tan head with decent retention. Toasted malt aroma and lots of coffee malts in the flavor. Taste is a tad burnt, but not bad. A hint of toffee sweetness. A very nice stout.

Pours dark mahogany with a 2-3 finger tan head that lasts and leaves a little lacing. Aroma is rast malt, chocolate, and fresh baked granola. Flavor is very sweet at first, a little oatmeal molasses cookies (just like mom used to make?), and roast malt. Followed by a rich wave of barely sweetened mocha coffee and a little bitter hops for a second right at the end. Mouthfeel is smooth, almost slick at first, dry overall. A great winter snack in a bottle!
