Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Smooth creamy body without being very heavy. Silky and velvet definitely fit. Sweet flavor with a milky quality to it. Very easy drinking and enjoyable. Solid beer.

My favorite of the Sam Smith collection. Very good in a bottle which is the only way I could get it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Sweet caramel, toffee, and chocolate notes on the aroma. Black with deep red on the edges of the glass, roasted barley and sweet smooth oats slam on my palate, also slight "wild" funk. Maybe this is due to open fermentation, but adds a nice addition to the flavor of the beer. Overall a great beer.

Black brown colour with almost no head. Taste of rasted dark chocolate, lactose, roasted malts, herbs. A little presence of smoke in aftertaste. Complex beer.

Po przelaniu do szkła tworzy się ładna beżowa piana, średnio trwała, pozostająca do końca w postaci obrączki. Barwa ciemno brązowa z rubinowymi refleksami, klarowna. W aromacie przyjemne nuty likieru czekoladowego, trufle, wanilia i delikatne espresso - przypomina to nieco "słabszego RISa". Smak świetny, czekoladowy, pralinowy, jest też kawa i rum. Odczucie w ustach średnio pełne, gładkie, wysycenie średnie do niskiego, podkreślające szlachetność trunku a jednocześnie podwyższając pijalność.

Bottle: Midnight black with a rich, tan head that shows excellent retention, especially for a stout. Lasts till the end of the glass, leaving lots of lacing behind. Aroma of roasted malts, deep caramel, mild burnt toffee, espresso, milled oats, & a solid back-end of grains. Nice flavor with a sweeter cocoa essence that pops out. Good creaminess, almost milky without getting that overly sweet lactose feeling. Earthy toast, caramel, oatmeal, coffee beans, & bitter cacao nibs in the finish. Good amount of carbonation; thick & pretty creamy body. Really nice oatmeal stout.

UPDATED: APR 8, 2015 Thick, black fluid, with a creamy-brown head. Sweet aroma, banana and treacle, thick and chocolatey. By far the best stout I’ve tried.

Bottle from Foods Plus, Plaistow NH. Aroma is a malty mix of bread dough and cocoa. Appears a clear dark-reddish brown--almost black/opaque. Frothy off-white head with fair staying power and lacing. One attribute this beer has that isn’t often rated is its great SOUND--from the great pour to the crackling of the dissipating head. Taste is medium sweet with mild bitterness and hints of chocolate. Medium to full-bodied with creamy smooth feel, soft carbonation and awesome, long finish. There is much going on with this beer on many levels which makes it extremely enjoyable and deserving of its high rating.
