Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800ís, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

As anyone can tell by my high rating numbers for this beer, I really am a fan of Smith's Oatmeal Stout. The number one seller for me is the richness of its taste. I really enjoy its full mouthful, and that coupled with a caramel, chocolate, and coffee-like flavor, makes me happy when I pour a glass of this into my favorite mug. The head is full, and the latticework is enticing. Darn good beer! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Oatmeal stout is amazing. One of sam smiths very best. Excellent aroma and has a nice hops associated with it.

This is probably the best of Sammy Smith. Great drinkability with just the right amount of aftertaste. Small bubbles and good consistency in the mouth.

355ml bottle served in a tulip glass. A: Pours a dark brown almost black color (amber tones against light) forming a medium and bubbled beige head. Medium retention and lots of lingering lacings left in the glass. A thin layer remains forever on the top S: Great smell of dark chocolate, chocolate malts, brown sugar, oatmeal and roasted malts. Notes of brown bread and yeasts T: Slightly sweet and quite roasted upftont. Notes of dark chocolate, chocolate malts, brown sugar, oatmeal. Quite malty beer. Mild roasted bitter end M: Medium creamy body. A bit molasses. Medium to low carbonation. Roasted aftertaste O: Excellent drinkability. One of the best British beers Iíve ever had [ BA Review @ 5/24/2011 ]

Pours dark brown with a nice tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, dark fruit, and hops. Flavor is sweet but thin and watery , and very hoppy for a stout. No body or texture.

Bottle from Utah Liquor store park city. Pours coca-cola brown with a thin brown head. nice molasses notes on the nose. smooth mouthfeel which makes sense given the oatmeal. I donít get a ton of lactose but I do get a nice molasses note from the malt. finishes clean. Itís a glorious beer.
