COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Pours black with a 2 inch tan head. Smells of malts and caramel with notes of chocolate and coffee. Tastes of chocolate, roasted malts and some coffee. Creamy and slightly bready with a full body and a dry finish. A fantastic oatmeal stout.

Bottle. Very dark liquid with average tan head. Medium to full body, light carbonation. Light sourness, medium sweetness. Sweet/bitter aftertaste. Aroma of hay, touch of roastiness and a hint of instant granulated coffee. Good one.

550mL bottle. Pours an opaque, stouty brown-black with a massive creamy mocha colored head with unparalleled retention and lacing. Nose is bakers chocolate, roasted barley, some coffee, and some of that famed Sam Smith butterscotchy goodness. Mouth is medium bodied, creamy, lots of cocoa, coffee beans. roasted barley, butterscotch, vanilla, raisins. I always like these on a crisp autumn (or frigid winter) evening, however, it’s the end of August and the heat and humidity have died down enough to make it feel like fall is almost here, so yeah. Strangely enough, I guess I never bothered rating this before. The was the first oatmeal stout that I ever had many years ago, and it is stil teh best as well -- or damn close to it.

Very dark brown color with reddish hue, average sized brownish head. Medium body, soft carbonation. Aroma of chocolate, dark fruits, outmeal, coffee. Medium sweet taste. Finish is slightly dry. Very good.

Nearly opaque black-brown with a thick tan head. Smell is dark chocolate, licorice, molasses, oatmeal. Taste is slightly sweet at first, oatmeal and warm grain, becomes slightly dry; well-rounded, good body but surprisingly light. Aftertaste of cocoa, fruity hops. Tasty.

Transfer from BA review on 12-10-12- Poured from bottle into pint glass Appearance – Pours a deep brown color with a big and thick tan colored head. The head has a nice level of retention, fading over ~ 5 min to give a decent level of lacing. Smell- The aroma is big of oats and chocolate. Mixed with these are some sweeter caramel and a light vanilla aroma. A light roasted malt and coffee aroma round out the remainder of the nose creating a sweet and roasty smell overall. Taste – The taste starts out with a smooth but dry oatmeal and roasty malt taste. A bitter chocolate flavor, that comes quickly after the initial taste, begins to get sweetened as the taste advances further. Flavors of caramel and some vanilla sweeten the brew quite a bit. The brew remains relatively sweet to the end where a light earthy hop joins the flavor. In the end a pleasant sweet oaty and lightly hopped chocolate flavor are left on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the creamier side for an only 5 % abv with a carbonation level that is just below average. Very nice for the stout style and letting all those great dark and malty flavors to be truly sensed by the tongue. Overall – A delicious stout that isn’t overwhelming with alcohol. It has a wonderful oat and chocolate flavor with just the right balance of sweet and hop.

Bottle to 6 oz taster Molasses, wheat, light cherry, chocolate, hay, sweetgrass, and malt. Dark brown with a tinge of red and a long lasting 2 mm creamy and frothy tan head. Taste is malt, molasses, oatmeal, malt with a bit of black pepper.

Very nice malty caramel aroma. Jet black colour with nice head. Very light and hoppy up front with very big malt chocolate finish. Heavy body with medium carbonation.

355ml bottles, 2013 as part of a Smith sampler, again 2014/07@TriState Tasting II, courtesy of bastarda. Very dry and almost coffee-grainy rendition of an oatmeal stout, with mellow powder chocolate notes complementing a great balance of woody liquorice and spicy hops. Solid stuff given its abv.
