COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800ís, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Thick creamy head. Pitch black appearance. Taste is very similar to a doppelbock, sweet taste, strong carbonation, soy sauce aftertaste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy

1.10.2014. Colour like cola, almost no head. Sweet aroma with raisins, coffee and roasted malts. Taste has chocolate, some roasted malts, bitterness. Good low abv stout but could still benefit from heavier body. Excellent in its class.

Pours nearly opaque deep brown with amber-brown highlights, two fingers of pillowy tan head, good retention and lacing. (4/5) Nose is roasty malt coffee and chocolate, red berries and citrus. (7/10) Taste is moderate sweet, mild bitter. (7/10) Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, creamy texture and lingering bitter finish. (4/5) This would be a really good oatmeal stout were it not for the distinctly metallic edge to the flavour, which I guess is coming from the dissolved solids in the well water? Itís still pretty good, mind you, but the metal flavour is a distinct, albeit minor, drawback. (15/20)

550 ml bottle bought at Gorgeous Wine & Cigar in Yuen Long.

Looks: Deep blackish brown colour; Two finger head with crumpety beige foam which lasted for 2 minutes. Excellent sticky lacing with no carbonation.

Aroma: Rich, fragrant and sweet roasted malt, with strong cream, roasted coffee beans, caramel, toffee, sugar, burnt toast, dark chocolate, strong raisins, very light lemon and light grass.

Taste: Mid to light sweet strongly-roasted malt, with strong metallic, strong roasted coffee beans, toffee, light soy sauce, caramel, moderate cream, strong roasted nuts, red fruits notes, molasses, yeast, strong lemon, strong bitter hops and grass.

Body: Medium body; Fairly thick and slightly creamy palate.

<i.Mouth Feel: Totally surprised by its superb roastyness Ė simple minded, but so damn strong and rich in coffee beans and toast and nutty taste its insanely likeable! And quite hard to believe its sweetness is really restrained, mostly thick molasses and with a touch of cherry like fruitness. The oatmeal gives out slight amount of thickness and bitterness. The metallic hard waterlÖ well itís pretty much offset by the roastyness so itís bearable. Chocolate and toffee taste seems a little muted. Overall itís still really nice!

Hoppiness: Light lemon and thin grass in nose, strong for both in taste. Bitterness from hops and oatmeal are high, pleasant enough for a lasting, strong astringent finish.

After taste: Quite dry. Very roasty, metallic and hoppy bitter to mouth.

Comments: I was expecting some strong smooth and rich oatmeal taste from this poster boy. Turns out itís still pretty impressive, particularly the complex aroma and dominant roast coffee beans. Toasty, hoppy with a somewhat aloof feel to it. Highly enjoyable if only they donít use the metallic-as- hell well water. Cheers!

Bottle. Until now, my favorite oatmeal stout. Noseand taste opens with chocolate, a hint of vanilla and roasted malt. Full round mouthfeel and some sweet. Very enjoyable

UPDATED: MAR 22, 2015 35.5.cl bottle, deep brown color with creamy head, roasted and coffee aroma, in mouth is really smooth, creamy, sweet, without carbonation, and full, but, i personally donít like the aftertaste, dry with lightly hopped notes... Generally i like stout beer, but I have drunk some better stout

Old rating. Chocolate malts, coffee and cream on the nose. More of the same on the palate. Rich and creamy mouthfeel and goes down smooth. One of my favorite British stouts.

This has always been one of my favorite brews in one of my favorite styles. A dark rich brown pour with a great malty aroma. Silky texture, smooth and satisfying. A great go to brew!
