Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Such harsh comments for a delicious stout. I can truly say I never had the best stout, but I don’t mind hunting for it either. Nice smooth pour with a rich creamy head. Sweat smell. Excellent full body taste, that’s very demanding of the palate. The head disappears quickly, and you can actually listen and hear the head fizzle and snap as it evaporates. Is this beer is trying to tell us something? I’m a different kind of beer rater, as well as tasting and smelling, I listen to what my beer has to say. Its telling me to finish up and mosey on off to bed. Enjoyed this stout to the extreme. Would highly recommend, a real pleasure to drink.

Bottle 055l @ home. Pours dark brown to black with solid dark beige head. Aroma is complex roasted malt, dark fruit, chocolate and hops. Flavor is sweet at the begining, reisins and plums, some roasted notes, chocolate and finish plesaently light bitter. Very well balanced, light body, light carbonation. Well done!

Samuel Smith does it right too often. This beer is no exception. Pours an almost opaque black, but with a subtle crimson transparency. The head is a good 2-3in thick with great cragginess. The aroma is powerful- coffee, raisin, other dried fruits, and some smoke in there as well. Mouthfeel for me is great, goes in sweet with a very slight bitterness at the end. The lacing as you diminish is great to see. This is a great after dinner instead of dessert or as a nightcap.

Classic oatmeal stout with creamy beige head and dark burgundy colour, blackish but still transparent. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, orange peel, raisins, smoked bacon, charcoal, caramel. Soft sweetish onset with the typical velvety mouthfeel of oats, light candi touch, bit smoky and meaty, with dry roasted bitterness in the end. Very appetizing stout.

550mL bottle. Pours an opaque, stouty brown-black with a massive creamy mocha colored head with unparalleled retention and lacing. Nose is bakers chocolate, roasted barley, some coffee, and some of that famed Sam Smith butterscotchy goodness. Mouth is medium bodied, creamy, lots of cocoa, coffee beans. roasted barley, butterscotch, vanilla, raisins. I always like these on a crisp autumn (or frigid winter) evening, however, it’s the end of August and the heat and humidity have died down enough to make it feel like fall is almost here, so yeah. Strangely enough, I guess I never bothered rating this before. The was the first oatmeal stout that I ever had many years ago, and it is stil teh best as well -- or damn close to it.
