3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle from the gift box.
A: Almost pure black with a inch thick creme color head.
N: Big chocolate, char, coffee, vanilla, some minerality and iron, leafiness and earthiness.
T: Bitter and sweet.
M: Medium body, fizzy carbonation, no alcohol.
O: Big chocolate stout. Some nice char elements, though the artesian effects do get to me in the nose. Like this as a sweet stout otherwise.

Bottle from Nissa, Hebden Bridge. Extremely dark brown with a small creamy off-white head. Has a full, dry chocolate nose. It’s slightly less stated in this respect in its taste, but there’s still plenty of a chocolate notes here too.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Sampled from 18.7oz bottle in pint glass.
Appearance: pours a very thick beige colored frothy head which falls very slowly. Moderate lacing left behind on glass. Nearly opaque dark reddish-brown.
Aroma: chocolate to the max! Roasted chocolate malt, cocoa, with milk sweetness and a mild earthy hops in the background.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and silky with a somewhat wet finish.
Flavor: similar to the aroma, but the chocolate is not quite as overwhelming. There is a better balance of the milk sweetness and dry, earthy hops to accompany the chocolate and cocoa flavors.
Overall: another extremely good offering from Samuel Smith.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle at home. Pours dark with a small beige head. Sweet aroma of chocolate sirup, bit roasted, malts, caramel, vanilla. Taste is sweet, bit watery chocolate sirup, some roasted malts, hint of vanilla, light roasted long chocolate aftertaste. Bit too thin and sweet for me, but at least there is a lot of chocolate.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Cocoa and vanilla in the aroma. Deep, dark cola brown color that looks opaque in the glass; dense, last one 2 - finger head of foam. The flavor is rich and deep. The chocolate malt and coca pair nocely, providing some roasted malt and sweet milk chocolate contrasts. There are hints of vanilla as well. The beer is slightly sweet, but just enough to accompany the chocolate. Medium body, very smooth and calm texture. Overall, this is a fantastic chocolate beer. I had high hopes from Samuel Smith and they definitely delivered. This is a really great beer!

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottled, 500ml from Morrison’s in Banbury. Black with off white head. There are chocolate notes in the aroma when pouring and a sweet, milky chocolate on the palate, reasonably silky and mouth filling. The sweetness becomes a little cloying with an artificial character. Boiled milk in the close. Interesting and reasonable.
