KyotoLefty (1371), Kyoto, Japan Jan 14, 2009 Fruity aroma, with chocolate and root beer. Black with a huge tan head.
Very well balanced flavor of chocolate, roasted malts, sassafras, a touch of dried fruits and caramel. Nice, thick body. Somewhat plain, but excellently balanced and no faults. Great drink.
UriahHeep (103), Georgia, USA Jan 13, 2009 Aroma of strong malt and coffee. A very good porter. Deep and roasted, chocolatey. A little bitterness. Full bodied brew. Beerman6686 (1266), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 13, 2009 This pours a very very dark brown with a ligh tan head. Aroma is really roasted malts and a bit nutty. Flavor is nice and roasted but not burnt, also hints of sweet chocolate and silky smooth. This is right up there with Edmund Fitzgerald. tedovertu (259), Apple Valley, Minnesota, USA Jan 13, 2009 My favorite from Samuel Smith I believe. Excellent flavor for a porter. Dark brown amber color with decent tan head. Dark fruits and chocolate aroma. A little tinge of caramel in the initial flavor. A great drink for the winter months. fidelis83 (709), Clinton, Iowa, USA Jan 7, 2009 Pours a deep mahogany with a 3 finger creamy and rocky mocha tan head that has great retention and leaves nice sticky lacing. Aroma is roast, molasses, chocolate, mild caramel, and a slight plum tangininess. Flavor is char, roast, chocolate, nice smoked and slightly charred ham and berry glaze. Finish has a delicious char, earthy, with a suprising fruity floral hop, herbal hop and woody tang. Body is slightly dry, astringent, and astringent. homeslice (36), , California, USA Jan 7, 2009 Updated: Jan 20, 2009Black ochre appearance with red highlight, semi-opaque and cream brown top. Smells of choco, berries, and hot caramel. Bitter intro w/ tastes of choco, caramel and honey. Slightly carbonated. Light for a dark. wyzzywyz22 (756), Wirral, Merseyside, England Jan 4, 2009 Bottle, Stirchley Wines, Birmingham.
Poured a dark brown with a dissipating creamy light brown head. Aroma was choccy malt, coffee, hop. The flavour was roasty toasty with more chocolate malt, coffee and a hint of caramel. Not bad, but its all a bit ho hum and I was starting to grow very weary of this towards the end of the glass. Not one I’ll be rushing to make a repeat purchase of. Think there’s much better in the ss quiver. emgesp (10), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA Jan 4, 2009 Pours dark brown with ruby highlights. Some lacing as the head fades away. Very nice looking beer.
There is this unique aroma that you only get from Samuel Smith’s beers. Dark fruits, and a smokey fried bacon aroma. It is a hard aroma to really pin down, but is so unique.
Strong smoke and slight peaty flavors dominate this beer. Chocolate flavors are masked by the smoke and a little dark fruits add to the complexity.
Medium body with perfect carbonation.
A very hearty beer that I would not recommend during a hot summer day. This is one to enjoy late fall and all of winter.
