Deep garnet with a tan head. Nice earthy black licorice aroma with roasted malt. Medium body. Lots of earthy molasses and sulfer flavors with black licorice. Drys out some for the finish. This beer is every bit as good now as it was 25 years ago.

Since the site has been down it is nearly impossible for me to recall drinking this beer, but I definitely remember enjoying it. It was very dark in color (black? opaque?) and tasted very malty with only a slight hop bitterness. It was tasty, and I’ll soon drink it again. Maybe re-rate it then.

Pours black with a fluffy tan head. Smell is of roasted chocolate. Taste is initially roasty with a hint of chocolate and molasses. The texture is thinner than I had expected. Carbonation was nice, but I use a bit more body. Overall a very drinkable brew. I could drink a few of these easy. As I said before this is definitely on the lighter side and could use a bit more complexity. Another great offering from Samuel Smith...they have yet to disappoint. Reviewed on: 05-03-2007

Bottle pours oqaque black with thin tan head. Aroma is roasted malt. First taste is sweet roasted malt then a slight bitterness with hint of dark fruits. Roasted malt finish, suprisingly creamy for a porter.

550ml bottle. BB Nov 08. Pours a deep near-black brown body with small dense tan head leaving sparce lace. Faint aroma, roasted grain most apparent; dark chocolate, milky coffee, brown sugar, toasted grain. Body is a bit on the lean side, reasonably low carbonation, bit of creaminess about the texture. Some lactic sourness about the body, nothing too astrigent. Nice malt driven body; cappacino coffee, dark chocolate and dark sugar as the nose seems to reflect, but more bold. Drying finishing, lingering black coffee-like bitterness and flavour. Nicely flavoured porter, i’d probably say it could be a bit fuller in body, but still a nice beer regardless.

Bottle. Pours dark brown bordering on black, red highlights in the light, with a fluffy off-white head. Nose – Roasty, a bit dry. More breadcrusty than coffee. Taste – Roasty coffee up front with a bit of acidity, some molasses and a hint of dark fruit as well. Bit of a dry, roasty finish. Mouthfeel – Creamy, but with a crisp, light carbonation.

Pretty good, good flavor but it seems watery in texture to me - almost as if it is watered down. Maybe it is the style of beer, but I would prever the taste and body to match its appearance - creamy, bold and strong.
