"Very dark, fairly full in body and packed with flavor. Intense, dry tangy character of roasted barley."

UPDATED: MAY 13, 2009 Mild, kinda sweet. Nothing special in my book (But Iím also not fond of porters). (Re-Rate) Bottle from BevMo Mira Mesa: Dark brown pour with an initial medium, but fading light brown head. Aroma is dark chocolate with a hint of smoke and maybe some coffee. Flavor starts lightly sweet with a little dark chocolate, some coffee, a little smoke and a milk chocolate finish. Light-medium body is smooth with moderate carbonation.

A great porter. Sweet, smooth, and full bodied flavor. Wonderful aroma, great appearence, nice head. A great great beer.

i was a bit drunk already when i had this, so it doesnít clearly stick out in my mind... but it was a great porter, with all the roasted barley goodness one can handle... not sure about the dry tangy character

A little bit too much of dryness. Maybe porter isnít my type of beer.

Did not enjoy this. Slightly skunked aroma with some roasted malt. Just not enough character in the flavor to be impressive. Iím not really fond of Porters. I drank this head-to-head with Fullerís London Porter and Fullerís won. While my brain tells me Porter is a perfectly legitimate style, my tongue tells me itís a half-assed stout.

Strong aroma of alcohol, coffee, and licorice. The taste was of strong smokiness, coffee, licorice, and wood. Left a crisp aftertaste of alcohol. It appeared opaque black, but when I held the glass up to the sunlight, I could see a faint red glow. Beautiful! This is one of my favorite porters.

cream headed slab of onyx; reddish cuts along the edges glow like the coils in a space heater. iíd hardly hefted my glass when the fragrance met me halfway: like someone trying to kindle a pyre of black licorice with stick matches; plus notes of hemp or burlap rope, and a fresh pungence of some raw smell of a fruit stand: melon rinds or seeds. yep, a strange melange, but rather nice. smooth, and the sweetness is entwined with the bitterness for gentle balance. very tasty, but itís true that it has a little superfluous margin of extra íwaterí there where some additional flavor should be.

Very good and somewhat dry porter. Associations of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate - maybe even cherry (or did Sam Adams Triple Bock mess up my taste buds?).

Huge coffee/chocolate nose. Deep brown colour, hint of purple, cappuccino head. Medium coffee taste, roasted malts, with some liquorice and smokiness toward the finish. Smooth as can be. Typically fine Samuel Smith product!
