Nearly opaque dark brown color with a medium tan head. Smokey, almost burnt malt aroma. Nice strong sweet roasted malt flavor, with a fairly dry hoppy finish.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Nearly opaque dark brown with ruby highlights and a medium tan head. Very slighly skunked aroma - why must they use clear bottles? Roast, milk chocolate, vanilla, smoke, and burnt caramel are also present. Medium creamy body with a low amount of carbonation. Smooth and relatively easy drinking. The flavor is still mostly intact, offering nice vanilla, roast and milk chocolate notes. Still good, but I will add it to the list of beers I need to rerate.

Well, this is traditionally THE poster, isn't it?
Brown, nearly opaque. Pours with a decent head, creamy and fine. Instant note of roasted malt in the air.
Toasted, maltiness with bread, caramel, toffe, chocolate character. Fairly dry, not as much mouthfeel as I'd like or expect. A moderately cidery finish as well.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Black as night with a big, fluffy head that lasts and laces nicely.
Nice faint coffee scent... pretty faint, but very appealing.
Nice and easy porter. Slighty coffee and chocolate... mmmm this one's a good one.
My only complaint is a tinge of a strange aftertaste. Not bad, but leaves me wondering what exactly that is.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
I'm drinking this right after sampling a Deschutes Black Butte Porter, so that's where my reference is coming from.
This is good, but I don't think it deserves the hype it gets.
Pours a very nice black with a nice head and lace.
Smells of coffee and nuts.
Taste is okay but not great. It's like drinking a foamy sweetened coffee. Very malty. There's a bit of an astringent aftertaste as well.
Mouthfeel is full and minerally. This is the one area where it is better than Deschutes. Drinkabiltiy goes down, though, because of the aftertaste and the fact that, well, I'm not exactly craving another one.
A good porter, but it doesn't measure up to Deschutes' offering.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a rich dark-brown/black brew with a thick tan-coloured head that fades to lace. Lacing lasts to the bottom of the pint. Smells like coffee, chocolate and dark malt. Intense coffee and chocolate flavours with a trace of raisiny sweetness and some faint hops in the finish. The body was a bit thinner than I would have expected. An excellent beer

Pours a jet black with a nice brown head with decent staying power. Smells of chocolate and walnut. A strong coffee flavor with a crisp finish. A nice porter.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: MAR 20, 2004 Black body, voluminous brown head. Aroma is slightly nutty and chocolatey. Distinct coffee bite in the flavor, dry and bitter finish. Some chocolate notes as well. Thin bodied but good.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: MAY 5, 2004 Pours with a creamy tan head, moderate lacing. Liquid is dark brown and translucent ruby red under bright light. Looks just like the Samuel Smith's Stouts. Aroma is sweet with some fruit undertones, apple cidar comes to mind. The creamy texture is aparent at first taste, kind of watery body. Flavor is slightly bitter, some roasted hops are in there, but not overpowering, coffee and chocolate comes through. Malt sweet finish, with some strange metallicness, and a hint of alcohol. Overall, I love it.

Nice thick creamy tan head that laced it's way down the glass to the very end. Clear and dark pour. Very good aroma, sweet. Nice creamy feel in the mouth with great finish
