unrulythings (73), Portland, Oregon, USA Apr 10, 2008 pours a deep brownish black color with a foamy tan head. aroma is of roasted malts and coffee. body is creamy. a bit tart with big roasted flavor and a hint of chocolate and pepper. changeup45 (782), Orlando, Florida, USA Apr 9, 2008 Very dark, almost black color. Poured a nice tan creamy head and left a good amount of lace. The head and lace seemed to lessen the further I got through the beer. Roasted malt aroma and flavor with some coffee taste in there too. Slightly tart and peppery. I can see this being a decent choice during the winter but something to stay away from during the spring and summer (for me). Medium to full bodied and rich. One of the best Porter’s I’ve tried, which generally is not one of my favorite styles. rcweir (120), Massachusetts, USA Apr 6, 2008 Pours midnight black with tan head. Low carbonation. Aroma is of plums and raisins. Thick, creamy texture with coffee bitterness and wine-like notes. A perfect balance. Unique69crazy (119), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Apr 5, 2008 Once again, from Samuel Smith’s, not what I had anticipated. It does have a good appearance and smell, but the taste isn’t there. It tastes a lot hoppier than I was expecting. Still fits the bill as a good porter with just some alternations. Dark and crisp with a small letdown in the middle daknole (2810), Plantation, Florida, USA Apr 2, 2008 Another big time winner from SS. Jet black with a burst of malt on the nose and on the tongue. As expected, chocolate and coffee notes. Perfect balance and mouthfeel. greedycheater (80), Oklahoma, USA Apr 1, 2008 Big dark beer. From the looks, I’m tempted to say this defines the class. Big, rich aroma. Full mouth feel. Chocolate, black pepper? Clean finish in spite of the heavy malt. emarkd (24), Georgia, USA Apr 1, 2008 Bottle. Pours almost black with a nice 1 cm tan head of very fine bubbles. Aroma is very rich and smoky. Plenty of roasted malts with hints of coffee and roasted nuts. Tastes like it smells - dark malty with hints of coffee and maybe chocolate, but not quite as pronounced as you’d expect. Feels nice and creamy in the mouth, though. Finish is quite dry. A good porter. Dacrza (245), Great Meadows, New Jersey, USA Mar 31, 2008 An old favorite revisited...black body with brown creamy quarter-inch head that leaves a flawless lacing...roasted coffee, rich toffee, smooth and smoky accents... creamy palate--unbelievably smooth and milky...the texture is as firm as it is lacey...mellow and natural, almost perfect in its proficiency....the reason I fell in love with beer tasting, selecting from the beer menu at Russell’s in Bloomsburg nearly ten years ago....for those Strat fans out there, like finding a SUPREME defensive rating...if you only drink light lagers and the occasional green bottle, start (and end) with this one from the dark side...
