Sweet oily thick aroma with a hint of red wine (merlot?). Taste is very smooth with roasted chocolate malt in the flavor. The roasted malt is also on the palate afterwards, giving it a nice dry finish. All nicely balanced, a real classic of the style and one of my faves. RiverHorse (454), New Jersey, USA

A very thick chocolately scent with notes of coffee and roastiness. There was a hint of vanilla with coffee beans, malt and roasted barley to taste. A very coating, creamy mouthfeel. rugbydude05 (285), Kew Gardens, New York, USA

Pours a coffee color with little head and a semi-sweet aroma. Flavor has hints of coffee and chocolate and sits well on the palate. I had this one outside on a 100 degree day and it was really refreshing, despite being a more typical cold weather brew. ChetLemmons (87), orlando, Florida, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Sep 5, 2007 great looking beer, although was disappointed at the lack of an original bottle, it’s petty, i know. great, long lasting head, to compliment the looks of the beer. detected a bit of coffee, chocolate, peanut butter, and maybe on a whim, some soy sauce. it’s a pretty filling brew, and i don’t know how many i would be able to stomach in one sitting, but would be perfect for coming home from work and enjoying a great tasting beer, or substituting a desert for this fine beverage. had to deduct a few points off the over all because i am a cheap bastard, as this beer is a tad pricey, and not readily available within my area. Pours black with a thin tan head. Nose is coffee with some milk chocolate, some smooth maltiness and just a touch of snuff. Some nice vanilla tones play well here. Mouth is malty, some roasted, smoky malts in the play here, but slightly on the burnt side. There’s some sponge and some raisins in here, quite a helping of vanilla and espresso too. Bit too bitter and burnt on the palate, but so enjoyable! Really nice, one of my favourite Sam Smiths beers. hammerbeck (101), Kentucky, USA
| 2.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 3/10 | 3/5 | 6/20 | Aug 29, 2007 I thought this tasted like ass. Actually, for a porter it was a lot smokier than I expected. While it was a fine drink, the pungent smoke flavor really got in the way.
