Light aroma of coffee and some malts. Flavor of roasted malts, nuts, maybe some chocolate sweetness. Smooth mouthfeel, maybe a little bit thin, but definatly a good porter. pubbe (493), Højbjerg, Denmark Jan 31, 2007 Bottle. Dark brown with mostly lasting light brown head. Malt, coffee and caramel in the aroma. Sweet malt and a little bitter chocolate in the flavor. Rather average finish. Canadianlush (169), Scottsdale, Arizona, USA Jan 28, 2007 Poured a nice black complete with a dark tan head that unfortunately dissipates too quickly. Out of the bottle it comes with complex aromas and plenty of flavor. Faint hints of chocolate, roasted nuts and some fruit. Very smooth and fairly sweet and consequently not that bitter. Mine came in a dark bottle and was a little on the thin side but still enjoyable. michael-pollack (2603), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 26, 2007 12oz. Bottle: Nice aroma of brownies, dark chocolate, roasted barley, and smoke. Strong scent. Poured very dark brown with a large, creamy, brown head that lasted throughout. Very good lacing. Opaque. Flavor of roasted barley, chocolate, and coffee. Lightly sweet and medium bitter. Medium body was thin. Dryish bitter finish tastes of roasting. Overall, a different but good porter. Beerdedone (1873), Croydon, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 26, 2007 pours ablack body with a tan head and a molasses aroma flavor was light with notes of sweetness finish is short and clean Heathen (723), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Jan 25, 2007 THOUGHTS: This is how a dark beer should look and smell. Great beer. Still surprised at how great the Samuel Smiths are, even though they ar in clear bottles. This was exactly what I think of when I think of a porter.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a dark brown-black with red when held up to the light. There was a large tan head that was mostly diminishing and left virtually no head. The aroma was moderate roasted and chocolate malt along with some toffee. The initial flavor was moderate sweetness and light bitterness and the finish flavor was light sweetness and moderate bitterness. with an average duration. The body ws medium and felt dry up front and oildy in back with fizzy carbonation. sceatha (2), Tennessee, USA does not count Jan 25, 2007 A good, oft maligned English porter. i like the nutty caramel/coffee aroma, and it’s beautiful in a pint glass.
