Chocolat aroma. Very very dark brown color, light brown head, good lace. Light sweet, chocolat start but more coffee and roasted bitterness in the finish. Sparkling, medium body and a little sandy in the finish.

Dark brown color, plenty of head and a bit of lacing. The nose has light sweet roast and licorice, creamy chocolate and nice molasses notes. The flavor is a bit light in the hop department but I can dig some light melanoidin sugars cruising the palate. It’s a bit oxidized and skunky but overall still a full bodied and very delicious porter. Much different from the average american brewpub porter.

Lets get three things straight at the outset. I am not a great fan of Sam Smiths brewery (the fact that they’ve bought a number of London pubs and turned them into keg only outlets doesn’t endear them to me), I’m not a great fan of Sam Smiths beers and I’m not a fan of pasteurised bottles. So I wasn’t expecting a lot from this beer. In fact, it was quite pleasant. Inky black with a big frothy beige head. Slightly woody aroma with licorice in the background. Cooking chocolate, roasted notes and more licorice on the palate. There is an overall bitter-sweet feel. Not very full bodied. Nice enough but still over-rated in my view. Bottled at the Princess Louise, Holborn, London, February 2002.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown almost black color with a longlasting creamy tan head. Has a fruity roasted malty chocolate aroma. Sweet roasted malty chocolate flavor with some fruity hints of dark fruit. Has a sweetish roasted malty finish with hints of chocolate.

Bottled. An excellent beer. The aroma is a sour roastiness and more reminiscent of a stout. The beer is very dark - as near black as damn it. The taste is sheer roastiness, some smokiness and some chocolate. A pleasure to drink. If I were tasting this blind I would have said Imperial Stout and a higher ABV as the flavours are so good.

Roasted malts combine with a slight sweetness and a fruity tang. Quite acceptable!

Black with a medium sized off-white head. Aroma has molasses, caramel and fruit with only hints of really dark roastiness. Roast malt, licorice, sweetish and well balanced flavour. Intensely dark, yet no burned notes.
