Lets get three things straight at the outset. I am not a great fan of Sam Smiths brewery (the fact that they’ve bought a number of London pubs and turned them into keg only outlets doesn’t endear them to me), I’m not a great fan of Sam Smiths beers and I’m not a fan of pasteurised bottles. So I wasn’t expecting a lot from this beer. In fact, it was quite pleasant. Inky black with a big frothy beige head. Slightly woody aroma with licorice in the background. Cooking chocolate, roasted notes and more licorice on the palate. There is an overall bitter-sweet feel. Not very full bodied. Nice enough but still over-rated in my view. Bottled at the Princess Louise, Holborn, London, February 2002.

I bought this bottle at the drink of the world in Zürich and I drank it after the job yesterday at home like a dessert. In my point of view, it is a decent porter, all the things that you could expect. The body is a powerful brown and black chocolate, thin foam, average carbonation. The taste is with notes of roasted malt, coffee, hop, decent bitterness, overall well balanced and classical.

Pours black with high beige foam. Aroma is sourish sweet, kiwi, fruits, freshness, some cream, light toast, grapes, berry pie. Taste is also refreshing, very fruity, grapes, some toasted white bread, berries. Very nice beer!

UPDATED: SEP 17, 2016 Bottiglia.
