Fruity malt nose with a rough edge to it. Wonderful taste, lots of lively hops, sniff of a spicyness behind a pleasent fruitness, keeps on tingling on the gums, surprisingly light palate for a stronger ale. Enjoyable. waolsen (1224), Littleton, Colorado, USA

Pours...well, the amber color that it looks to be when you look at it through the clear glass bottle. (With a very modest head).
The aroma is a lovely warm malt and a the softly sour grassy smell of British hops. Understated, but really, really nice.
The flavor is the same. If you’re expecting a big beer, a PacNW winter seasonal or similar, this is going to disappoint along every axis. It’s not high-alcohol; it’s not darkly malted; it’s not strongly hopped. But it is perfectly balanced, and since (for whatever reason) I managed not to go in with the wrong expectations, you find this to be an excellent beer, softly sweet with caramel malt, slightly tangy hops, a distinctive Samuel Smith nuttiness.
I’m really impressed, but I want to try this one on its own, without food, next time; admittedly it was not very successful at cutting through a modestly spicy dinner. BeerHawk (1203), Huntsville, Alabama, USA

| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Nov 29, 2004 Copperish hue that reminds me of a glass of tea except there is a thin foamy layer of head. This is a flavor less english strong ale that is very dissappointing for me. Is bitter but at the same time very bland and boring. No thank you! jcr (1195), Jasper, Indiana, USA

It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and lightly bitter. Some spice in the taste. A slight tartness emerges in the aftertaste.
