UPDATED: JUL 11, 2011 Bottle. Poured a medium amber in color with a super small white fizzy head and virtually had no lacing to speak of. The aroma was almost non-existent with a slight hint of bready malts and doughy yeast with just a very slight hint of caramel and some spice. It tasted slightly bitter with a very, very mild hint of spice in the beginning but the flavor faded quickly and left you with no real flavor at the finish. Mouthfeel was light in body and watery in texture with a flat carbonation. Overall nothing special definitely not worth having another. Which I find quite surprising coming from this brewer who puts out some of the best tasting beers in the world.

Copper colored beer with an off-white head. Aromas of toasted wheat, caramel, and toffee. Tastes of sweet caramel, toffee notes, nutty hints, and toasted barley. Sweet, nutty finish. The flavor profile opens up as the beer warms. Very tasty.

"always a very nice seasonal brew, until i had a few skunky ones in clear bottles. sam smith’s has realized this error, and has now started bottling in brown only, and the gains are measurable. this is now constantly a good beer again. it pours a rich golden-mahogony color, similar to AV Winter Solstice. It’s actually similar to that beer in it’s malty vanilla goodness, but it’s richer, and more complex...and therefore better. nice blend of spices easily mask the 6% abv. good beer! 2012 version is a hit!"

550ml bottle served in a Thumbler. A: Pours an absolutely clear copper color forming a medium bubbled and creamy white to yellow head. Medium to low retention and some spotty and molasses lacings are left in the glass S: Extremely malty. Sweet malts, toffee, caramel malts, roasted malts. Some spicy hints. Quite fruity and biscuity too. Honey. Flowery and earthy hops. Biscuity T: Slightly sweet upfront with strong notes of sweet and caramel malts. Toffee, honey, wheat biscuits and dark fruits (plums ans raisins, mainly). Overall a dry taste with considerable hops bitterness. Malts and hops combination is very English style. Not very far from a classic Bitter M: Medium body and carbonation. Bitter and biscuity aftertaste O: Easy-drinking beer. Good bittersweet balance. Strong English character. Transfer from BA review on 9-23-13- Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a deep amber, lightly brown color with a one finger thick off-white cream colored head. The head has a fantastic level of retention, very slowly fading over time to leave a great leave of thick lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma is a rather roasted in nature with a lots of toasted malt and roasted bready smells. Mixed with these aromas are a nice sweeter smell of caramel and some fruit of apple and peach as well as spice aromas of nutmeg and clove. Taste – The taste begins with a big bready and sweet taste of a more caramel and toffee nature. As the taste advances it initially sweetens and then maintains a rather nice level of sweetness throughout. The roasted flavors get a bit stronger as the flavor advances with some notes of toast coming to the tongue. Along with the light increase in roast, spice flavors come to the tongue along with some lighter herbal hop tastes. In the end the blend of roasted, sweet, spice and light hop leaves a nice pleasantly smooth taste on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average to slightly thicker side in terms of thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is on the average to slightly above average side. The slightly thicker body was very nice for the blend of roasted, spice and sweet tastes, with the higher carbonation level really making of a more easy drinking brew. Overall – A rather tasty winter warmer. It has a nice blend of roasted, spice, and sweet flavors which when combined with the rather easy drinking feel and smooth tastes, produces a great winter brew.

2/5/2013. From bottle. Copper color with a tan head. Spicy and malty aromas with caramel flavors. Light fruit, light spices and a mellow finish. Not bad at all.
