Some of the oak casks at Samuel Smithís date back more than a century with the individual oak staves being replaced by the Old Brewery coopers over the years. Gradually the casks soak in more & more of the character of the ale fermented in stone Yorkshire squares. Yorkshire Stingo is aged for at least a year, matured in these well-used oak casks in the breweryís underground cellars deriving fruit, raisin, treacle toffee, Christmas pudding and slight oaky flavours, before being further naturally conditioned in bottle.

Wow, this is a really nice brew. Deep red color. This isnít nearly as dark as I was expecting. Very strong, bold, dried fruits with nuts, mild roots, and wood. Very light soy sauce. I mean barely perceptible. Almost hints at being Belgian, but itís not. Imagine a Belgian strong ale, with some some of the yeast cut back. The alcohol comes through, but not really representative of how high the ABV is. This is a really complex beer. Feels nice on the palate, too. Itís got a little skin to it, if you know what I mean. Only complaint is itís like thirteen bucks for (I think) 18oz. Itís good, but I donít know about thirteen dollars good.

Bottle. 8%. A clear deep amber colour with a medium off white head. Aroma of toffee, some fruitcake, raisin, slight red berries, a little orange, subtle oak and treacle. Taste is similar of toffee, fruitcake, treacle, raisin, some brown sugar, subtle prune, a little vanilla and some oak. Medium bodied and a slightly oily texture. A sweetish, warming, oaky, vanilla finish. Feels like a Christmas beer this, full of spices, fruitcake flavours and some alcohol warmth. Tasty.
