Bottle pours a big manilla white head. The nose is of toffee, plum, maybe even raison, definitely fruity. Appearance is a light brown or deep amber when held up to the light. There is a smoothness to this beer that it is hard to find in most American brews up to the 9% mark. The taste comes on as fruity and slightly sweet. The follow up is slightly warm from the alcohol and a bit dry and woody from the aging process. The complex malt flavors and the warming alcohol slightly reminds me of a Belgian Dubbel. I could fall in love with this beer.

Pours a deep amber with a coarse tan head. Aroma is toffee, dark fruits, light coffee and nice oaky notes with some acidity. Soft body with flavors of dark fruits, toffee, oak, touches of nuttiness with creamy milk chocolate ending. No noticeable alcohol with it being 9%. Solid beer.

Most folks, myself included, probably don’t know that Stingo is an older word that means old ale or old beer. Seems appropriate for this beer, which is apparently aged for an entire year in Samuel Smith’s famous Yorkshire Squares. I’m using a goblet for this one tonight, as a special beer deserves a special glass. Pours a murky and ruddy amber. Carbonation levels are pretty high, as there’s a constant stream of bubbles popping up from the bottom of the glass. No real head on this beer, just bubbles on the outer rim of the glass. Aroma is rich, deep, and pungent. You can really pick out the oak, which adds a nice earth characteristic. The first taste is simply incredible. Flavor profile is stunningly complex, with loads of molasses, dark cherry, raisin, oak, and tobacco clamoring for attention on the palate. This beer has the perfect amount of carbonation to keep the mouthfeel balanced, as the heavy flavor profile and malt profile could easily become syrupy if left alone. Happily that’s not the case here, though the heavy alcohol warmth makes this a sipping beer. Samuel Smith’s has done it again, creating a textbook example of a classic English style – in the case of Yorkshire Stingo, the Old Ale. Highly recommended.

Pours cloudy amber with 2 fingers of head.
The aroma is here is very malty, but has a distinct belgian yeast aroma. In fact, I would say this has more in common with Orval than an English Ale. Nevertheless, there is a hoppy presence which carries a citrus note to clean some of the malty, yeasty aromas up.
The flavor profile is malty with caramel and some tropical fruit. A very interesting combination for an English Ale. I also get some vanilla which likely comes from the barrel aging. This also has an very rich, creamy mouthfeel.
There’s terrific depth here. A very enjoyable beer to savor.
Very pricey, however.

courtesy of Laurent Mousson - dark amber-brown colour with a persistent beige foam; aroma of blood oranges with some spicy tones in the background; very creamy mouthfeel, full-bodied and with a fair bitterness; very dry with long notes of dried fruits (apples, oranges), oak and a warming alcohol touch - unusual and beautiful brew

I am one of the fortunate ones in the US to have tried Stingo. Instead of going on with the head and colors that everyone else has already explained, I will rave about what I tasted. Each sip gave me a different sample of many flavours, being malt, fruits and spices, caramel and definitely oaky. What amazed me was this beer seemed to have a different outstanding taste with each sip. I have only experienced that once before with Dogfish’s 120 Minute (but with different flavors, of course.
