Yeasty nose, chalky, with sour oak and leafy must. Sour body with peachy fruit notes, caramel, and musty, cobwebby oak. Interesting.

Lovely rich malt, caramel aroma with hints of fruit. Nice amber colour with a decent tan head. Caramel flavour, nutty with malt. Good texture. The beer seems well crafted as expected from Sam Smiths. The High ABV gives it an alcoholic kick. The beer delivers this well to unlike some other beers. Oak flavours come out as it warms. Very nice beer. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 4, 2010 Bottle ( 550ml ). Shared with blankboy and garthicus. Slightly hazy reddish-amber with an average beige frothy head. Hazy that Sam Smith apple-fruity yeast smell, a bit nutty, modestly boozy - mostly fruity/boozy. Tastes like an apple-y boozy trippel with some odd oiliness. Slightly watery, astringent and boozy, with a weird nutty bitter linger. I like it, but I don’t get all that Christmas character they talk about. garthicus (1354), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 4, 2010 Thanks to HogTownHarry for sharing this with Blankboy and I. Appearance: Copper body with a medium thick, slightly brown head. Aroma: Vanilla, winter fruit, raisins, plums, toffee and (like the commercial description) Christmas pudding. Very nice indeed. Flavour: Quite a thick mouthfeel, alcohol is evident at first but mellowed out pretty quickly, raisins, copper, spice and a long toffee and oak finish. I can imagine sitting in a pub in Yorkshire with my buddy Chris sipping this by the fire. dkachur (2441), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA

| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 20/20 | Jan 3, 2010 Pours a thick latherous head that lingers on a hazed amber liquid. Smells of sweetness and minerals. Full nectar w/ mild effers. A watery feel although full. The sweetness factor is low and has an exotic acidity to it like kiwi fruit. Muted caramel, minerals, aged stonefruit, dusted bubblegum, roasted coffee bean. The finish lingers. Very old world in style. A delicious brew. GAManiac (1212), Atlanta, Georgia, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 3, 2010 Pours a hazy caramel brown with a thick creamy beige head that recedes slowly and leaves very good lacing.
The aroma is sweet with lots of caramel malts, brown sugar and a surprisingly big wood presence. I’m also getting lots of booze-soaked plums and raisins.
The taste is even oakier with a sticky sweet dark fruits and caramel malts anchoring things underneath. The finish is sweet with toffee but still dry with lots of oaky tannins and spiciness lingering.
The mouthfeel is medium bodied with good carbonation but still seems slick and sticky nonetheless.
I’m definitely digging this one as it’s definitely a very sweet beer but with a nice balancing job being done by the barrel character. Really nice beer. WakeandBake (444), Greenville, Michigan, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 3, 2010 Bottle. A muddy golden ruby color with a lasting two finger light tan head , some spotty lacong left behind , light to medium carbonation . Aroma of apple skins , raisons, sweet toffee malt , oak , burbon and a hint of horse blanket . Flavor is malty with a light anount of funk , yeasty , bready with a little more of the burbon type note coming through , rasins and at times hints of apple. Fairly bitter , malty , medium body with a slick mouthfeel , and a spicy hop finish . This was a strange brew for sure but the more of it I drank the more I liked it , not sure I would call it sessionable , but quite interesting .
