3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from trade. Pours black with frothy head. Chocolate indeed, but mostly in the taste. Not much happening in the nose, roasted barely behind earthy hops. Taste is chewy dark chocolate with roasted bitter finish. Taste like it could be brewed at any US micro, and i dont mean that as a diss. I guess i expected Japanese imperial stouts to somehow be different?

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
2015 edition, from old notes.
Pours a dark brown/black with a nice thick tan head, good lacing. Lots of bitter chocolate aroma, coffee, dark fruits, roasted malt. A strong malt taste, chocolate, slightly sweet. A touch of bitter herb on the end. Goes down smoothly, medium-full body. Good local imperial stout.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Dark foamy chocolate in a one finger head. This has a nice bite and crisp palate - the 9% alcohol is hidden extremely well. It's sweet without being malty, well-balanced

330ml bottle 2015 edition (9% ABV) from Ito Yokado in Asagaya. Poured into a tulip glass. Dark brownish black color with a huge soapy brown head. Big aromas of burnt coffee, coriander, roasted malts, bitter chocolate, alcohol and hops on the nose. Tastes strongly of bitter dark cacao, burnt coffee, cardamom with slight hints of corrainder and arugula. Canít really taste the alcohol on the palate. Well-hidden. Oily mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Mostly bitter and peppery finish.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
On tap @ Nippon Craft Beer Fest Jan 2014. Aroma is dark chocolate, roasted malts, roasted barley, and cocoa powder. Appearance is jet black with a thin foam rim. Taste is boozey chocolate, roasted malts, dry bitter cofee beans, dried raisin, smooth sweet plums. Finish is extremely dry coffee, booze and chocolate. Overall, this is one of the best beers Iíve had in Japan. Itís so perfectly balanced and itís everything you want in an Imperial Stout. Easy A+ rating. Kanpai!

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from Asahiya. Sweey choco. dark roast malt nose. Pours thick and black, with a 1-cm. dark tan head. Rich chocolate initial / rough hooping and some dark fruit / finish is mildly sweet and even a bit woody. Medium body (a bit thin for an imperial). All pretty good, except for the rough patch in mid palate.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
330 ml bottle from Dogenzaka Shinonoya. Pours nice deep and dark brown with a thin brown head. Aroma is full of roast, dark bitter chocolate, a bit of alcohol - that is quite well hidden for a beer of 9%. It has some dark fruits lurking as well. Taste is what I would expect from a nice imperial stout. It is definitely sweet but not boozy, lots of roasted malts mingling with malt base, chocolate sweetness - and finishing up in a bitter chocolate and cocoa finish. I guess there is a lot coming out from roast malts - and there should be no real chocolate and cocoa used. Nice and enjoyable beer, well executed. Should buy a few more of these and see what happens if I try it after some extra ageing.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. 2012 vintage. A more or less black one, topped by a dense, finger-thick dark beige head that leaves lacings. The aroma has a nice bretty touch, with some lemon and woody hints. Pepper notes. Donít really like that the brett cloakes the chocolate and roasted malts so well though. Itís super smooth on the palate, lighlty warming, and quite full-bodied. Feeling dry even though thereís certainly residual sweetness. Chocolate and some roasted malts too, lasting for a good while. Some alcohol burn too in the end. Sure a nice one, and it would be interesting to sample an unbretted edition. 140118
