3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 shoulderbroken (1125) - Tokyo, JAPAN - OCT 7, 2012
Tap at the Watering Hole. Clear golden colour, small white head. Aroma is grainy, indistinct touch of fruit. Not massive odour. Taste is pleasantly fruity, but predominately wheat. Quite dry. Touch of tropical fruit in the background. Peach and orange. But main thing is the grain. Slight bitterness at the end. Quite nice, but not much to it. Feels maybe a little too fizzy.

Bottle. Cloudy, pale yellow colour. Very light aroma with some yeast and fruit. Soft mouthfeel and light carbonation. Taste is also very mild, light sweetness with some citrus. Refreshing beer but it doesn’t really appeal to my tastes.

Can from KyotoLefty. Very acidic, citrus aroma. Flavors are almost grapefruit. Good flavors for a golden ale.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Ron (1985) - Rochester, New York, USA - SEP 1, 2009
Bottle at the RB Rochester Gathering, Aug. 30/09. Thanks, KyotoLefty! Golden Ale like. Some hops and orange in the aroma. The orange flavor gives it alittle zing to help it along.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 jb (1806) - Rochester, New York, USA - AUG 31, 2009
Bottle at the RB Rochester Gathering, Sept. 09. Thanks, KyotoLefty! I believe this is what we were served -- Shonen Gold. Fruity orange nose. Hazy dark yellow appearance. Dry a bit of a metallic taste. Sweetness in the background. Nice balance.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 KyotoLefty (4719) - Kyoto, JAPAN - SEP 20, 2008
UPDATED: AUG 31, 2009 I guess this is their Shonan Gold. Had it on tap at Wachi in Kyoto.
Light copper tint, basically golden, slightly orange. Medium to low head. Fragrant aroma of orange, malt, butter, hops. Fruity and appetizing, though unusual. Rich, complex flavor: quite a bit of orange, including bitter peel and sweet-and-sour juice. Decent malt character, like a golden to pale ale, also noticeable aroma hops. Well balanced, with lots going on. Good combined bitterness, with sour as well. Finish is complex and bitter from orange peel and hops. Long lasting astringency remains. A very interesting fruit beer, and I must say a success.
