Our darkest ale is a true American Stout. Black as a moonless night and full of chocolate and roasted barley flavor, This beer has a creamy, velvety texture from the oats and finishes smooth.

22 ounce bottle thanks to JohnCoctosin Finally opened this one. Big carbonated head that fills most of the glass. A bit of a metallic nose with chocolate taste. Ok body. Decent overall. Lacking mostly in nose and overall oatmeal stout quality.

Poured from a 22 ounce bottle courtesy of JohnCoctosin. Pours a dark black with a thick beige head that took a long time to die down. Aroma of choclate, and roasted malt. Flavors of choclate, roasted malt and coffee. A good oatmeal stout.

UPDATED: OCT 21, 2010 Draft - it was easily the best beer in a bar with 20 macro taps. Not too shabby. Nice dark brown appearance with a frothy light tan head and lacing. Coffee and cocoa on the aroma - really heavy on the coffee especially. Flavor is roasted malt, coffee, bitter cocoa, and some burnt notes. The burnt flavors made it seem a little amateur on the finish, like a homebrew. The palate has coffee graininess and is a little rough, with medium body and low carbonation. A solid brew overall. Nice and flavorful.

UPDATED: FEB 1, 2012 From a 22 oz bottle purchased at the Bottle Barn in Santa Rosa, this poured a very opaque black with a fat tan head and very robust lacing in the glass. The nose greets you with aromas of burnt malts with some chocolate and just a tiny bit of coffee. Medium body and mouthfeel and quite smooth. Flavor is more chocolate than anything with a hint of smoke. Dry bitter finish. A very nice sweet stout that is eminently drinkable. This a 2012 update. This one was a bit of a gusher but as before was very tasty. No change in score but just as good as the first time.

From a bottle. Poured an attractive dark brown/black with a medium-sized and persistent light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, oats, yeast, must, sweetness, cocoa and caramel. Flavor was pretty complex and assertive, if not great tasting for me. Very roasted and earthy, with some caramel, cocoa and fruity notes at times. Earthy finish. Not overly sweet, actually not more than an average sweetness. Gets better with time, which is always a nice feature. Overall it was quite solid and enjoyable.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with beige head; good retention and lacing. Aroma is dark fruit (plums and cherries), roasted malt, and licorice. Flavor is roasted malt, chocolate, smoke, and dark fruit undertones. Medium body, carbonation, and warmth. Good beer.

22 ounce bottle purchased at Cost Plus World Market in Davis, CA. Aroma has some burnt roastiness with hints of sweet sugar and anise. Pretty interesting aroma. Mostly opaque dark brown body with a large, dark tan head that leaves some nice lacing. Starts with a little coffee flavoring with a touch of sweetness. Pretty carbonated. Finishes with a burnt, roasted, bitter chalky flavor and mouthfeel.

Rather light and watery stout, a bit of chocolate and molasses, some coffee; all that’s nice, but just too much chalkiness just kills this for me. Fizzy, biting carbonation.

29-Dec-10 (22-oz bottle: Purchased 26-Aug-10 for $4.49 at the Pizza Port Bottle Shop in Carlsbad, CA) Dark Night indeed pours dark as a night in the wilderness, but sans the bright full moon on the bottle’s label. The light-brown head explodes to over two inches in height and takes many minutes to settle to a quarter inch, leaving thick rings and patches of foam on the glass in the process. The malts themselves are balanced: moderately roasty and a bit ashy with gentle bitterness, but moderately sweet as well. Flavors of dark chocolate/cacao, ashtray, licorice, blackstrap molasses, black coffee, oatmeal, earth, dark stone fruit, and apple skin. Roasty and chocolaty aroma with a fair bit of weedy leafiness and apple skin. Full bodied on the palate with slightly expansive and prickly carbonation in the mouth and a reasonably dry finish for a medium-sweet beer. Overall, a balanced, full-flavored stout with appropriate weight and solid drinkability, but the overall flavor profile doesn’t quite reach the style’s upper echelon.
