COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Santa Cruz Ale Works I.P.A. Another excellent example of how brewers out West can manipulate hops. Originally designed by the British, this style was made with more hops and alcohol in order to survive the long travelling ships from Great Britain to India, at the time a new English Colony. This lightly colored ale is very aggressively hopped from start to finish. From the first sip the hop bitterness and aroma are overwhelming then rounds off nicely with a citrusy finish. Including dry-hopping we use over 30 lbs. per batch ƒ lbs. per bbl) Approx 6.5% Alc.

Hazy (chill hazy?) light orange, little head. Moderate orangey aroma, light doughy malts and some light yeast. Dry, quite bitter flavor with little hops flavor apparent, what’s there is light acid and grapefruit. Very dusty and with a slight bit of off phenolic yeastiness. It’s got the bitter but needs a lot more in the hops aroma and flavor dept.

22oz bottle from BevMo! Mission Valley. No where near as good as the pale. A light citrus nose led to a malty finish. They should take their pale and double the ingredients.

CaryTheDude bought this. Pours orange, and smells and tastes like fizzy dishwater with a flabby finish. I guess they tried hard, but still, come on.

Definitely a "sleeper" IPA - pours golden clear with white foam. Aroma is pure pine and citrus. Flavor is full of bitterness but ends on a dry floral hoppy note with just a small touch of bread. There is no sweetness in this IPA - so it definitely fits into the West Coast IPA category. Definitely deserves a better rating than its getting.

UPDATED: SEP 29, 2008 Very bitter. Mouthfeel is high carbonation which is unpleasant and ends with a kind of metallic flavor. Obviously an IPA and has potential, but they should probably change their recipe a bit, get away from that dish soap taste.

22 ounce bomber purchased at BevMo in Vacaville, CA. Aroma has some initial citrus grapefruity, lightly piney hop aromas. Cascade-ish. A bit metallic, too. Kinda floral. Transparent golden body with a slightly orange twinge. Frothy white-ish head and fair lacing. Metallic, piney, herbal hop flavors are present throughout. Pretty bitter, but not too over the top. Lacks some malt balance. Some citrus hop flavors are present in the middle. Pretty long, dry, bitter finish. Straight forward, pretty unbalanced, and not overly imaginative. Fair enough.

Bomber from BevMo. Hazy medium golden in color. Foamy white head. Citric hoppy nose. Some hoppiness up front. Fairly high carbonation give a little tininess. Decent hops with a little bit of a mineral water quality. Not bad.

Much better than the hefe. Pours clear amber with a medium white head and good lacing. Clean, fresh grassy aroma with pink grapefruit and pine. Nice balance of caramel malt and the grapefruit, lemon, and orange flavor hops without being sweet and sticky. There is some soap and earthy/grass hop tastes from time to time, but overall and nice IPA.

Bottle. Amber beer with an off-white head. Citrusy aroma. Citrusy (grapefruit) flavor with light caramel. Medium body. Decent bitterness. Lingering grapefruit.

UPDATED: OCT 17, 2009 22oz bottle. Orange with a big, sticky head. Fresh piney and grapefruity hops in the aroma. Nice malt base in the flavor, with good juicy citric hops, but pretty tame for an IPA, especially compared to their pale ale. I think that one might even have a more bitter flavor, but this is a drinkable and flavorful IPA regardless. Crisp, medium body. (7,4,7,3,14=3.5) Rerate: 22oz bottle and draught. After a couple more times having this since the initial case that I had from the brewery last year, I have to say that it certainly hasn’t gotten any better, and tastes like all bittering hops and husky malt. Aroma hops are just not cutting it for an IPA, and the IBUs could stand to be reduced by a good amount to balance this out.
