COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Black IPA transcends style. The idea is simple, but the flavor is complex. It is everything you want in a great IPA, but with a little bit of chocolate. The crisp, dry punch of hops leaves you wondering how this beer has such a balanced flavor. The secret is Midnight Wheat. Aromas of passion fruit, citrus, and pine cut their way through the dark malts to both titillate and challenge the senses. The dry finish and dark ebony color are distinctive characteristics for this winter seasonal and make for a smooth and approachable beer for the masses.

Man this is good. Like super good. Tons of pine and citrus aroma just slams you as soon as you open it. Itís like going into a damn pine forest. Taste is so fresh. It has a nice citrus grapefruit pine taste but with a roasty, coffee stout character. Itís really nicely balanced. I havenít had a ton of these black IPAís and most Iíve had have been dece at best but this one is really good.

From the can. I know i have previously statedi was done with this style, but i was planning on attending a party my neighbor was having, but didnít end up going, so i am sitting on a six pack. Pine citrus, but mostly pine in the nose with something burnt. the roast just is out of place in the flavor. I think i liked Yeti too much. if you want to do a black ipa, just throw your balls over your shoulder and brew an insane hopped imperial stout. this just seems halfhearted. i want the malt backbone to go with this roast note. the hops are flavorful, resiny, with a nice orange note. Hell, i will use a similar mix for an IPA i will brew soon.

I do like black IPAís. The upfront nose and flavor is hoppy, more like a traditional IPA. The middle and finish is a bit more smooth and the malts take over. A little kick at the end.

"Not dated...might be older...but itís their own damn fault. I probably wonít bother with this one again. Looks the part but had a very weak nose, more light roast than anything else. Whereís the hops?! Average body and flavor. Meh."

Santa Fe Black IPA sure does have a nice ring to it. Though not quite black, this ale pours a very dark shade of brown and takes on a gorgeous mahogany hue when held up to light. This Black IPA is intriguing because the nose is very hop-forward but the taste is surprisingly malty. Citrusy hops do make a big impression but the strongest note is from the roasted character in the middle-back of the mouth. While the finish does revert back to fresh, fruity hops, that coffee and caramel malt kick is what is most memorable.

Can. A- Hoppy, malty, roasty, pine. A- Dark red black color, dark liquid, tan head. T- Malty, pepper, piney, citrus, bitter. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, smooth finish. O- Surprised at the amount of malty tones in here. A good beer nonetheless.

Deep ruby with a nice cream topping. Hop aroma is pleasant but mild. Body is a bit thin as well. A lot of malt sweetness and only traces of darker malts. Finish is where bitterness finally pops.

Can into a nonic pint. Could smell the big roasty nose as soon as I popped the tab. Pours a nice dark brown with a thin foamy tan head. As noted, aroma is big on the roasted malt, but with a pleasant grass, citrus, and bubblegum blend as well. Pretty well-balanced. The dry hop finish really lingers. Easy drinking, solid black IPA.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Specís - Downtown, shared with jcos, 5/23/14

Aroma: The nose is roast and pine, with a good amount of coffee/chocolate
Appearance: It pours a dark brown-black color with a tan head and some fairly heavy lace
Flavor: The flavor is much the same, coffee/chocolate, light sweet, with clean pine bitterness
Palate: The body is light-medium, clean and smooth, with a lasting, dry finish
Overall Impression: This is a pretty tasty, well balanced Black IPA. Enjoyable stuff. Well made. Plenty drinkable. I have no complaints, this is a nice example of the style.
