This Black IPA transcends style. The idea is simple, but the flavor is complex. It is everything you want in a great IPA, but with a little bit of chocolate. The crisp, dry punch of hops leaves you wondering how this beer has such a balanced flavor. The secret is Midnight Wheat. Aromas of passion fruit, citrus, and pine cut their way through the dark malts to both titillate and challenge the senses. The dry finish and dark ebony color are distinctive characteristics for this winter seasonal and make for a smooth and approachable beer for the masses.

12 oz can. Pours a clear, dark brown with reddish hues. Aroma is tangerine, pine, toffee. Flavor is pine, citrus, toffee, caramel, roasted grain. A nice Black IPA. Has the bitterness of the IPA, but a sweetness from the darker malts. Quite flavorful and easy on the palate.

From the can this ’hoppy porter’ gives a mild vanilla aroma and looks good. This beer finishes poorly, with more vanilla and dominating over roasted flavor.

Can at home. Pour is deep brown, almost black with a slight red tint and small tan head - good lacing. Roasty, slightly tangy, piney, bready, grassy, and marshmallow aroma. Taste is toasty, moldy, cocoa, light coffee, earthy, grassy, metallic, and sourdough with a medium bitter finish. Slick mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Pretty weak black IPA.

On tap at Cowgirl on Santa Fe. Pours a deep copper/black color with a creamy tan head. Complex flavors of chocolate malts and hop bitterness. Very well balanced with nice smokey tones. One of the best Black IPAs I've tasted. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pretty spicy, somewhat bitter yet has malty notes. Less "black" in this IPA than I expected. Hoppy, crisp, dry, clean, not too simple nor complex.

Can. Black pour with a nice light brown head. Huge dank pine and citrus hops. Slight coffee also. Really roasty and bitter. Hops linger and alcohol is undetected. Solid drinking here and really enjoyable.

Santa Fe Black IPA has a thick, soapy, beige head, a dark, red-brown appearance, and heavy lacing left on the glass. The aroma is very noticeably citrusy, with some background bread crust and malt. Taste is of roasted grain, citrus, hop resin, chocolate, some bitterness, and sugar. Mouthfeel is medium, and Santa Fe Black IPA finishes mostly dry, easy drinking, and not the least bit alchohilic. Overall, I think it’s really tasty! RJT

Can poured a clear brown hue w/ a large frothy tan head and sticky lacing. Bold hop aroma. Initial taste is faint sweet w/ a bold bitter of long lasting duration. Tastes are pine, grass, passion fruit, grapefruit, roasted coffee, dark breads, and hay. Full bodied, soft carbonation.

Translucent black brown. Nose of piney hops and some dark malt. Roasted malt flavors, with pine and lightly fruity hops. Tasty black IPA. Another solid offering from Santa Fe.

Can poured a clear dark reddish brown with a lasting creamy beige head. Aromas of roasted malt, charcoal, earthiness, grapefruit zest and pine. Palate was medium bodied and crisp with a dry finish. Flavors of roasted malt, earthiness, charcoal, pine and grapefruit zest with a crisp dry bitter lingering roasty finish.

A clear dark brown ipa with a thin brown head. In aroma, beautiful citrusy pulp floral hops, grapefruit grapefruit, caramel, treacle, smooth and pleasing. In mouth, a nice smooth chocolate malt with coffee, caramel, catty hops, resinous and floral, well balanced.
