This Black IPA transcends style. The idea is simple, but the flavor is complex. It is everything you want in a great IPA, but with a little bit of chocolate. The crisp, dry punch of hops leaves you wondering how this beer has such a balanced flavor. The secret is Midnight Wheat. Aromas of passion fruit, citrus, and pine cut their way through the dark malts to both titillate and challenge the senses. The dry finish and dark ebony color are distinctive characteristics for this winter seasonal and make for a smooth and approachable beer for the masses.

12 oz can. Pours a clear, dark brown with reddish hues. Aroma is tangerine, pine, toffee. Flavor is pine, citrus, toffee, caramel, roasted grain. A nice Black IPA. Has the bitterness of the IPA, but a sweetness from the darker malts. Quite flavorful and easy on the palate.

Can at home. Pours clear black with a medium, frothy tan head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is roast and chocolate malt with prunes, earthy and spicy hops and licorice notes. Flavor is rich dark malt, dark fruits, lightly tart, earthy and spicy hops with medium hop bitterness and a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation.

Can pours tar-black with tan lace. Smooth, balanced, melted licorice and mile chocolate on the palate. Hides its 7.1% ABV well, finishing round and sweetly pleasant. Overall, I could’ve used more hop aroma for this style, but a very good beer.

Can. Clear dark brown with a think beige head that lasts. Aromas of roasted malt, pine, light chocolate, caramel and citrus. Flavor is roasted malt, pine resin, light biscuit, and citrus. Medium bodied, crisp with a dry, bitter end.

Can. Pretty decent black ipa. Citrus and pine hops, and some coffee and chocolate flavors. Well balanced and drinkable, especially for 7.1%.

Can as a trade extra. Thanks! Pours black with a big fluffy off white to khaki colored head. Nice aroma of pine, roast, grass, very pleasant. Flavor is roasty and porter like with some chocolate notes, a bit of spicy influence, and some balancing grassy and somewhat citrusy hops. Medium light bodied, medium plus carbonation. Pretty easy drinker, but not particularly distinguishable from the trove of the style out there that tend to not be super exciting. Worth drinking, not really worth seeking out unless this is your style.

on tap can pours reddish brown with a big tan head. Great-looking can as well. Soft fruity hop nose with hints of acetaldehyde. Light roast, more fruity hoppiness, a bit of squash, with a bitter finish. Kinda slippery mouthfeel.

Man this is good. Like super good. Tons of pine and citrus aroma just slams you as soon as you open it. It’s like going into a damn pine forest. Taste is so fresh. It has a nice citrus grapefruit pine taste but with a roasty, coffee stout character. It’s really nicely balanced. I haven’t had a ton of these black IPA’s and most I’ve had have been dece at best but this one is really good.

From the can. I know i have previously statedi was done with this style, but i was planning on attending a party my neighbor was having, but didn’t end up going, so i am sitting on a six pack. Pine citrus, but mostly pine in the nose with something burnt. the roast just is out of place in the flavor. I think i liked Yeti too much. if you want to do a black ipa, just throw your balls over your shoulder and brew an insane hopped imperial stout. this just seems halfhearted. i want the malt backbone to go with this roast note. the hops are flavorful, resiny, with a nice orange note. Hell, i will use a similar mix for an IPA i will brew soon.

I do like black IPA’s. The upfront nose and flavor is hoppy, more like a traditional IPA. The middle and finish is a bit more smooth and the malts take over. A little kick at the end.

"Not dated...might be older...but it’s their own damn fault. I probably won’t bother with this one again. Looks the part but had a very weak nose, more light roast than anything else. Where’s the hops?! Average body and flavor. Meh."
