crizay (1056), Brook Park (was Tampa,FL), Ohio, USA Apr 11, 2008 Red amber pour, small white head. Aroma is spciy, candi sugar, belgian malts. Flavor is caramel, raisens, candi sugar, and a dry hopped leafy flavor. More of a strong ale really, and lacking in complexity.
jayg (952), Florida, USA May 6, 2008 Sampled from dchmela bottle up @ redlight. Clear copper color with a broken white head. Strong grassy hop character over sweet malts, real peppery. Real malty start, then peppery grassy hops and some alcohol burn. Nice and hoppy BW, although the alcohol is a bit apparent. mmm///beer (404), Austin, Texas, USA May 5, 2008 Updated: May 6, 2008HYPE? Let’s see- 651 mL bottle poured into whatever I damn well feel like- poured transparent dark (if you can call it that) amber. Light carbonation of tiny bubbles, thin white head stayed around for a smoke with some lacing. Aroma of caramel, cream, hops, with a small note of fruit (odd). Hits the mouth with a defined medium body, the best way to describe the taste is the smell from lacquer after it has cured- the taste overall is harsh and is not refined, wish it was so I could describe what it was like- this is not something for the weak of heart- even bathtub gin I made growing up has a better taste than this. Finish has alcohol note that overpowers any note what it could it be like. First word as same as the first? Ummm.... YEAH. Avoid. One hour after consuming- I got ill- TWICE- rate is .5. I have had nothing but TUMS, water, and weak black coffee after this, and it’s 4pm. F%#$ ME! dchmela (500), Orlando, Florida, USA May 2, 2008 22oz bottle from Boltz7555. Pours a dark reddish brown with a thick off white head. Big malty caramel malt, barley wine aroma with lots of very peppery hops. Taste is much smoother than the aroma suggests, the big malt is balanced nicely against the hops. The hops are not spicy in the taste at all. Very nice easy drinking barley wine. Drnk_McDermott (1476), Park Forest, Illinois, USA Apr 28, 2008 Bomber bottle sampled at Pre-DLD. Despite the abv strength of this one, shows some interesting ESB character. A nice hop load that doesn’t rely exclusively on the American gargle-blasters, balanced with some supportive malts. Don’t know the vintage of my sample, but all agreed this was over-aged. Some papery oxidation and phenol cuts into some interesting flavors. mmather (101), Colorado, USA Apr 27, 2008 from a 22oz bottle. lots of caramel and malt with some nice hops for balance. One of the few barleywines that should just be drank rather than aged. I have not been able to make this one better by aging it. It always has been smooth, not overpowering alcohol wise with great balance. Just drink it...
