Pigfoot (2222), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA May 12, 2008 Chicken Killer Barleywine, Santa Fe Brewing, New Mexico’s First Microbrewery.
Interesting: "Chicken Killer Barleywine Is a revolutionary beer that will someday define America’s unique barley wine style." Really? Rather a bold statement! "...the potency of Chicken Killer gives us the remarkable spectrum of flavors that can be found in no other beer, in no other city." You don’t say! Well, let’s try it and see...
Clouded, rich, hazy, garnet hue. huge, creamy head.
Wood, brandy, and cherry in the aroma. Leather and soft spices, with a whiff of green apple, Funky fruit unfolds.
Heat hits right off with the first taste. Highly hopped, but mellow soon enough. Richness and bold flavor hangs long in the mouth. Booze is felt, too, abundant flavor is appeciated, but, despite the boasts, it doesn’t go anywhere new, really, nowhere Bigfoot hasn’t been. Feels a bit like some British barleywines, not as much of the full hop force of the American style.
This is a fully flavored beast, though, and should be savored at just the right temperature, just the right occasion, sipped slowly, and shared with friends.
ucusty (849), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Jul 23, 2008 Tasted at the Carolina Crew gathering, Greenville NC - thanks to Hellbilly for this! Hazy orange pour. Grainy malty aroma. Slightly hot flavor with a thin mouth-feel. Notes of fruit and caramel JCB (889), Durham, North Carolina, USA Jul 20, 2008 Tasted at the Carolina Crew gathering, Greenville - thanks to ucusty for sharing! Deep red pour, slight floral hops in the aroma along with pretty standard bready malts. Flavors are pretty average, but tend to clash together and leaves things a bit acrid at moments. Strangely enough, for all this it wasn’t even consistently assertive, finishing somewhat watery at times. TURDFERGUSON (1021), Carrboro, North Carolina, USA Jul 19, 2008 Courtesy of Ucusty. Dark amber red. Nose is caramel with a bit of hops. Flavor is sweet with a bit hops. Nice smooth mouthfeel. Im drunk. troyc (937), A ’moist’ county, Texas, USA Jul 10, 2008 (Bottle) Pours a reddish amber color with a small tan head. Strong malty aroma. Taste is very malty as well, with just a hint of hops in the finish. Includes notes of caramel, molasses, and sweet toffee. Light citrus as well. I agree that this is a pretty drinkable barleywine, with only light alcohol notes. kidmartinek (656), austin, Texas, USA Jul 8, 2008 Pours with a mess of foam. Is this bottle conditioned? I don’t think so. Medium/dark amber in color. Off white dense head. Sappy malt aroma. Almost syrupy malty flavor, sweet, sugary, and molasassy; Is that a word?Almost milky texture. Descent hoppy tasting finish. A thick barely wine that is pretty sweet, hides its’ % well and, well, yes, it does satisfy.
