COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A true Bavarian wheat yeast, sixty percent wheat malt, and German hops make Santa Fe Wheat Beer as true to the style as any American rendition can be. German Wheat Beer, with its hints of banana and clove, its delectable, spicy hops, and its pale golden color, is becoming increasingly popular in America’s craft brewing world, and with good reason: wheat beers are both light enough to please light beer drinkers, and complex enough to please true micro-brew connoisseurs. To mimic a classic German Hefeweizen, after pouring your Santa Fe Wheat Beer into a glass, swirl the last few drops in the bottle to loosen the yeast from the bottom, then pour the yeast over the top of your beer.

12 ounce bottle. Pours a somewhat hazy gold with an average white head. Aroma is wheat, malt, lemon and spice. Taste is somewhat sweet, similar to the aroma. Found it light and refreshing. Enjoyable.

This just doesn’t quite meet the promise. Poured with a small to medium off white head that fades to a light cover quickly, and little lace. Color is a hazy, dirty amber. Aroma is a mild yeast, malt, plus hint of fruit. Flavor is like nose, plus some of the Bavarian spice, but very little of the fruits. On the dry side and kind of boring. Gets a better rating than I thought it would. Finish is fairly short and forgettable.

12oz bottle. Cloudy orange-tan. Quick fading foamy white head. Crisp lemon-clove aroma, some candy banana as well. Medium bodied, crisp up front, with a very mellow, watery, malt finish. I really get more lemon in this than a typical Hefeweizen, but it sort of adds some fresh crispness I suppose. Rather mundane and subdued, not a particularly exemplary example, but still a refreshing, enjoyable beer.

Tasted from a 12oz bottle. Pours clear light orange with an average white head that leaves a thin spot of lace in the center of the beer. The nose is classic banana and clove wheat beer with good yeast and just a hint of hops. The flavor is just as expected with the banana and wheat flavors melding nicely with clove and hops spiciness. The body is thin, and almost watery with very lively carbonation and a long spicy hops finish.

Aroma - banana, clove; Appearance - golden, extremely hazy, opaque, fluffy head, nice lacing; Taste - light wheat front, hint of fruit in the back, bold spiciness, clove finish; Palate - very crisp, decent body; Overall - solid effort yet the overly crisp mouthfeel kills much of the flavor.

Bottle - very lively, lightly hazy gold pour, with a frothy, thick, well-sustained head - subdued by complex aroma, with notes of yeast, understated phenols, orange and lemon zest, honey, lavender - creamy mouthfeel - very light and balanced - very subtle, which some might mistake for being simplistic, but it is not - dough, yeasty, tart orange - a bit of crispy grain character - mellow phenols - tangy and earthy - fairly dry and quite spicy - finish of lemon and dry grains - quite lovely, really.

UPDATED: AUG 30, 2010 bottle conditioned. unfiltered. hazed but bright copper colored body with a finely-bubbled white head, naturally created and doughy/soft in appearance. nose is clean: delicate dough, soft cream, tart oranges and lemon, zesty but restrained phenols. rich, snappy, full, creamy with a delicate and soft carbonation - perfectly textured. crisp dried mandarin orange with light dough/cake yeast; nothing out of balance. refreshingly drinkable. probably the best US-made hefeweizen available right now.

Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy/fizzy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is hazy light to medium yellow. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain/bread), lightly to moderately yeasty (cobwebs), with notes of banana, clove, lemon zest, tangerine, hint of pear. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Quite solid. Santa Fe is a darn good brewery. This, Chicken Killer, and the Pale Ale are all rock solid brews...clean, aromatically delightful, and well-balanced.

12oz bottle thanks to BostonDoug1981! Pours a hazy bright glowing golden yellow with a thick dense white froth. Aroma is a bit oxidized, some present sweetness, meaty yeast, light rubber, just a bit of citrus also. Flavor is spritzy with some noticeable alcohol, nutty, herbal, very light flavors, not as sweet as I was suspecting from the aroma, actually fairly dry which can be pleasant, quick finish with a slightly metallic wheat aftertaste. Light bodied with active spritzy finer soda carbonation, refreshing and super light. A hefe soda.
