COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is the kind of beer that gives the word "stout" a reputation. Extra generous quantities of barley malt, followed by vigorous fermentation leaves this "imperial" heavy weight with 8% alcohol A.B.V. and a body as full as chocolate bread pudding. A complimentary and complex array of bitter notes comes form potent American hops, earthy British hops, black-roasted malts and, of course, coffee. Santa Fe Brewing Company uses only top-quality ingredients like organically grown East Timor coffee beans blended with New Guinea coffee beans, locally roasted by O’hori’s Coffee House. Its heavenly flavor and aroma can’t be beat or imitated.

Big tan head atop a dark brown body. Impressive coffee aroma with a bit of chocolate. Expected coffee flavors, a bit on the bitter side. Some milk chocolate with lingering bitterness. A tasty stout.

On tap at Flying Saucer in Houston. Deep walnut, thin mocha head. Aroma is heavy on the dark roast coffee; chocolate and lactose notes. The chocolate is more prominent in the taste, maybe closer to 50/50 with the coffee. Not real heavy on dark ripe fruits, but I think I taste some behind the coffee and chocolate. Body is smooth, creamy, rich. Soft carbo. Gave palate a 5; not sure I’ve ever done that before. Really tasty beer (if you like coffee). Goes down smooth.

Love the smell. Taste is almost like burnt leaves to me. I can see how appealing this can be to some. Strong flavors, good body.

Black color, with hints of light about the edges. Not really thick or viscous looking for stout. Leaves a thin tan foam after pour, but doesn’t last long. Straight up coffee aroma, sweet, but lacks depth and is a bit one dimensional perhaps. Flavor has a bit more roasted bitterness than the smell suggests, but I’m not sure it stacks up against the cloying sweetness of vanilla/cola like malt. The coffee taste is somewhat heavy, almost like it dominates the overall flavor instead of complementing the beer. There isn’t much contrast from start to finish in the sip either. Alcohol seems pretty mild actually, not really understanding the "Imperial" title here. Moderately thick body, decent carbonation. Overall a slight disappointment. Not a well refined Coffee Stout, and a little too sweet. Considering the abundance of options in the Coffee beer arena these days, this one will be easily forgotten.

Can. Very strong, robust coffee aroma with very light hints of chocolate. Pours black with a decent light brown head with ok retention and lacing. Starts with a a lot of roasted coffee flavors with a tiny hint of chocolate. Finishes smooth but still uber heavy if the roast coffee flavors that assault the palate with coffee. Good for the coffee lover, I would guess but for anyone else a heavy barrage of coffee was definitely not my favorites.

12 ounce can that one of my friends gave to me. No date that I can find on it. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with almost an inch tan head that stayed around for a bit. There’s also a small amount of lacing. Aroma is nice, the brew smells mostly like coffee but there’s also some burnt/charred malt, caramel and some bittersweet chocolate noticeable. For the most part I think the taste is pretty much like the aroma, but there’s also some vanilla flavor. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s smooth and easy to drink with a moderate amount of carbonation. I thought this was a good coffee stout. Glad I got to try it, but also disappointed I won’t get to try this again soon since Santa Fe Brewing doesn’t distribute here. Definitely worth picking up if you come across some!

Draft. Pours a medium, well retained, beige head, with hints of lacing, over a clear dark brown black (SRM 40) body......nose is heavy coffee, hints of cocoa chocolate, minimal herbal hops, balance to the coffee and roasted malts.....taste is lightly sweet, with heavy coffee, cocoa, chocolate, finishing with light hop but heavy coffee bitterness.....mouth feel, medium body, slight alcohol warmth, carbonation creates creaminess. This is quite overly dominated by the remarkably heavy coffee. The result is a very simple coffee flavored beer. None of the other elements in an Imperial Stout are allowed to come out. No fruits, no hops, no toffee/caramel, no umami, just coffee. BJCP 6/3/11/5/5

Tried it in a can at Brookside Art Annual. It has a great coffee flavor, I could see myself drinking it in the morning once in awhile. Finds a good balance with the heaviness.

Une bonne tasse d’espresso avec un chocolat noir fondant. L’astringence est ferme au départ mais s’atténue avec le temps. Très vif et enraciné ce café.
