What happens when you take our legendary Chicken Killer Barley Wine and let it take a long nap in a bourbon barrel? It turns into the palate-blowing liquid you hold in your hand. Our Kickiní Chicken Bourbon-Barrel Aged Barley Wine uses twice the ingredients of our other beers, but we extract only half the usual amount of liquid from them. Then itís barrel aged for 9 months. The result is a potent, smooth and flavorful concoction with bourbon-like undertones of vanilla and caramel. Know what itís like to be kicked in the mouth by a chicken? Youíre about to find out.

An intriguing brew, the bourbon flavor comes through strong, but there are also notes of fruit and caramel. The initial palate sensation is acidic, wine-like. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. It poured a hazy amber color with a white head. The aroma was of cedar, bourbon, caramel, dark fruits and brown sugar. The taste was similar to the aroma with more bourbon, caramel, dark fruits and brown sugar. Pretty tasty.

Review is of Bomber from 5/2014 Pours a walnut brown body. Head is about 1/5th of an inch and white. Lacing and head retention were mediocre. Smell is of sweet, nutty toffee, Bit of vanilla and whisky are next. Some soy sauce/oxidation are also present. Hops arent present, alcohol is there but not bad for a bourbon aged barleywine. Taste is slightly sour, getting a little bit of plum and oxidation. Caramel malt, rye, and whisky are next, followed by burnt oak. Hops are not detected and alcohol is pretty mellow for 12% alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and decently carbonated. Head died quickly unfortunately, couldíve used the creamy texture of a full head for this one. Overall this beer just doesnt live up to its base beer version. It has some off flavors of oxidation and sourness that are especially unpleasant in a barleywine. Itís unfortunate, I usually really enjoy Santa fe brewingís offerings.

22oz bomber: This one poured a murky caramel color. There was just a wisp of a head that left no lacing. It has a nice nose. Lots of scents complementing each other but nothing overpowering. Bourbon, alcohol, caramel, vanilla, some fruit. The taste is good. A little sweet. Caramel malts, fruit, faint bourbon, slight oak, vanilla. A nice barleywine.

From a 22 oz bomber with wax covering into a Leffe chalice. This bottle is at least 2 years old, possibly 4. Pours brown with small head and lace. Aroma of bourbon, funky dark fruits, dark malts. Medium carbonation and significant mouthfeel. Flavors of funky prune-plum juice, dark malts, bourbon, tart musty cherries. Overall big and complex, worth allowing to open up so you can enjoy the smooth potent concoction.

Beer 6000, by mistake :) I am not a big fan of Chicken Killer, but this still held potential. Iíve had a couple nice Santa Fe beers. In the end, this came SOOOOO close tobeing REALLY good, but the fault(s) were too much to overlook. Aroma out of the bottle was BIG vanilla and wood and malt. Very nice. But upon pouring, a little astringency (like youíd find in an off bottle of scotch ale). Slight, but there. The flavor starts out super sweet, but super smooth, but than BAM...that same lemony astringency hits you right before you swallow. Got better as it warmed, but never went away. Otherwise a superb barreled BW, but hard to get past.

Bottle. Pours a hazy amber with an off-white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of sweet grains, with some vanilla, a bit of apple and a backing bourbon note. Flavor has apple, sweet grains, caramel and some bourbon in the finish.

Bottle. A- Dark fruits, caramel, rosy, whiskey, woody. A- Mahogany color, slightly hazy liquid, minimal head. T- Dark fruits, malty, caramel, bourbon, rosy, slightly sweet. P- Full body, average texture, soft carbonation, smooth finish. O- One of the sweetest and smoothest barley wines I have had to date. There is an aroma and taste that I canít wait put together, but itís a pleasant one at that. Canít really tell this has been aged that much, but itís subtly there.

Kickin Chickenís defining characteristic is its quirkiness. The name, bottle art, and flavors all give you something out of the ordinary. In the case of the ale itself, the quirks work both for and against it. For starters, Kickin Chicken doesnít quite have the rich, dark color you usually see out of a barley wine but that isnít to say that the liquid is unattractive. The smell is very complex but itís also unusual. The sweet aromas of booze, fruit, and subtle floral qualities are definitely intriguing but also a bit strange. Iím most willing to embrace this barley wineís oddness when it comes to the flavor. I love the strong notes of caramel and vanilla. Still, thereís a weird malty sweetness at the front of the tongue thatís hard to identify and seems misplaced. All said, Kickin Chicken is an idiosyncratic ale. Fortunately, that mostly works in its favor.
