COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
What happens when you take our legendary Chicken Killer Barley Wine and let it take a long nap in a bourbon barrel? It turns into the palate-blowing liquid you hold in your hand. Our Kickin’ Chicken Bourbon-Barrel Aged Barley Wine uses twice the ingredients of our other beers, but we extract only half the usual amount of liquid from them. Then it’s barrel aged for 9 months. The result is a potent, smooth and flavorful concoction with bourbon-like undertones of vanilla and caramel. Know what it’s like to be kicked in the mouth by a chicken? You’re about to find out.

Not sure of the vintage. Pours a nice cloudy brown orange with almost no head. The BBAing was done very nicely with this beer. Warm, sweet, malty, a bit boozy very drinkable and quite tasty I would definitely grab a few more of these to lay dawn and enjoy over the next few years if given the opportunity!

UPDATED: MAR 21, 2013 Pours medium brown with beige head. Smells sour with a soapy grainy sweetness with the vanilla and sweetness of the barrel peaking through. The taste is very rich with lots of grains and a prevailing tart/sour with barrel notes. The sour brings a vinegar light acidic cherry melon fruit flavor with the roasted barley giving it a really nice bed to play in. The bourbon barrel is a close afterthought, showing nicely in the finish. The carbonation is smooth and it all sets up like sour beer, but has a great barrel aged barleywine flavor. It could rank under the sour wild in my book not a barleywine outright. It finishes mostly clean with lingering bittering grains in the back of my tongue and a sweet sugary barrel feel in the front. The bourbon warms as it goes down and coats everything leaving the desirable light boozy warming sensation. Got one to age because this could go anywhere, good or bad.

(22oz bottle thanks to bu11zeye) cloudy honey brown color with soapy edge bubbles. Nose of bourbon, honey, caramel, and a bit of chlorine. Taste of honey, big alcohol, caramel, sweet grain, and a bit hot in the finish. Big, bold, and decadent overall.

Tasted from bottle at DLD in April. Lightish brown color, but that color is solid. A thin layer of foam. Smell is a little sweet, not far off from a Bigfoot. Oh, my! A lot of stuff going on in the tongue, Makes for an excellent barleywine. Just a little bit of hop layer at the start. Then pretty sweet malts, but with plenty of malt character. Noticeably alcoholic. But with a light soda texture. A little oak in the finish.

Tasted on 3/19/13 from a waxed and capped 650mL bomber bottle purchased at Quarter’s in 2010. Pours clear dark burnt orange with a thin tan head that recedes to thin lace. The nose is full of sweet caramel and toffee with tons of oaky brown sugar and maple bourbon, some toasted bitterness, and just a touch of dill oak as well. The flavor is much the same with the toasted bitterness coming through nicely, the caramel and toffee maltiness are there as well as tons of bourbon. The body is full with just lighter than average carbonation and a long malty caramel and maple bourbon finish. The heat is not hidden on this one as well as the regular version.

When opening this bottle, make sure you have a few friends for sharing, because this brew is strong. Also, make sure you like the aroma of bourbon, because that is easily the most dominant element. This beverage pours a dark amber-brown, mostly opaque, with a nice frothy head. The alcohol aroma is almost overpowering. Beneath generous layers of bourbon, hints of vanilla, burnt caramel, raisins, prunes, and spices emerge. The liquid is thick and oily. The flavor is sweet, fiery, and moderately bitter. It has potent, heady effects. This is an improvement from Santa Fe’s standard barleywine ale, but I wonder what would happen if a more excellent barleywine had been aged in those barrels...?
