The Kriek is part of our Los Innovadores series of wild fermented ales. Inspired by the time-honored Belgian Lambics fermented with cherries, it’s an incredibly refreshing and balanced take on the classic style. The beer aged in American Oak barrels for two years with a carefully selected blend of wild yeasts, eventually undergoing a secondary fermentation with world-famous Michigan tart cherries and sake yeast. The result is an ale with a bright garnet color and an intense cherry aroma, reminiscent of warm cherry pie, that is both sweet and tart, followed by a complex sour flavor and a crisp finish.

Starting Gravity: 15.5 degrees Plato
Ending Gravity: 1 degrees Plato
Grain: 2-row malted barley, unmalted wheat

Draft to tulip. Looks solid; a fairly transparent reddish orange with a floaty or two and white head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells tart and funky with notes of cherry and soft vinegar. Tastes like it smells with a somewhat tart, lighter-bodied mouthfeel (especially for the abv, which is hidden pretty well). A touch medicinal. Good, not great.

Enjoyed at gabf 2014. It pours with an orange copper body that has a bit of a pink hue and supports a nice off white head. The aroma offers up tartness, a little bit of berry tartness, a slice of oak and then even more oak with a bigger pull. The taste starts tart but not over the top tart and the initial tartness gets filled in by berry notes lined with berry tartness. It later pulls into a bit of funk and kind of soft oak notes. Pretty solid Kriek.

Beer #18 of NM 100. 2014 Bottle. Way better than I remember from a few years ago. Moderately sour. A little funky-horse blanket, hay. No shortage of cherry. High carbonation-as it should be. Slight vegetal character in the finish whereas that is all I remember from the first time I had it.

Bottle thanks to Bruce. Pours a cloudy orange red with small frothy white head that lasts. The aroma is strong cherry skin, oak, funk. Medium mouthfeel with tart cherry, oak, light dryness, easy to drink, very good.

2013 bottle courtesy of daknole. Aroma is fairly fruity with a moderately strong cherry character. Light oak note with a slight medicinal phenolic character. Medium light acidity. Light juiciness. Pours a slightly cloudy red with pinkish orange highlights. Slightly off white, pinkish head that is slightly thin and quickly recedes to the edges where it lingers. No lacing and faint legs. Flavor has a light sweetness and moderately strong cherry character. Medium acidity with hints of Brett character but not the classic barnyard Brett. Doesn’t have the medicinal phenolic character that the aroma had. Cherry flavor is also fairly fresh and juicy. Mouthfeel Is medium light bodied to medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall it’s a pretty good Kriek with a lot of cherry character. A nice medium light acidity with a light Brett character. I wish it had a more complex Brett character though and its a bit too fruity for my preferences. One of the better American Krieks though. A pretty nice beer.

Beautiful bright red color with light pink head. Aroma is huge cherry pie and some sour notes. Flavor is more pie filling, tart cherries, and cranberry.

Red pour with a white head. The aroma has some nice cherry notes as well as some biscuit malt and alight bit of funk. The flavor is similar. I get some cherries and a light bit of tartness as well as some oak and some sweet brown sugar. Juicy tasting. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

(750ml flip top) clear medium crimson, off white bubbles. Nose of Brett, sour cherries, vinegar that detracts. Taste of sour cherry, vinegar, pie filling, wet wood, neat beer but certainly has a few flaws.

750 swingtop bottle courtesy of a daknole trade. Thanks, Dak. Pours a nice deep reddish crimson glow, fruit punch, some darkness in the middle, a gentle haze moves to a darker but transparent deep berry reddish glow on the edges and bottom. A frothy subtly pink white head dies to a small filmy layer, loose lacing. Well carbonated. Aromas are distinct cherryskin, gentle sweetness, a more spritzy and sour appeal really takes over. Some fruit punch, lemony lactic life and raspberry pulp scoots in. Some gentle oak, red wine, but more fruit and black cherry, firm sour presence. I wouldn’t call it complex, but enjoyable. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied, a touch of girth in the middle. Cherryskin, raspberry, fleshy blackcherry, a bit of boysenberry, more black raspberry. Nice, fairly seedy. The sourness, it hits quickly. Not overdone, a firmly carbonated body kinda provides some synergy. Firmer lactic life, lemony and sour. The middle offers a but more pulpy fruit, raspberry is seedy, making this Kriek not JUST a flat out cherry sour. Not medicinal feeling, some nice complexity of fruit but for some subtle barrel, gentle sweetness working in it’s fairly approachable. Not overly sour, nice lactic elements mix with sour berries, black cherry. A gentle Balsamic wash is subtle. Backend is tart, berry and cherryskin, a bit tannic with some gentle oak, touches of Bslasamic vinegar is subtle. The fruit element, fairly rich up front, taapers off back here. Displays more barrel, skin, a touch of vanilla and some gentle Bslamic elements. Carbonation again is firm. Finish is nice, a bit more muted. The nose is fairly potent, the fruit plays quite nice up front and into the middle, drying up and giving a good dose of oak into the backend, touches of red wine. Not as complex as one might expect, but pretty agreeable, good drinker, really nice fruit presence. Nice.
