COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A trademark beer of the Santa Fe Brewing Companyís master brewer, Ty Levis, the State Pen Porter has every reason to be one of his favorites. It is flavorful, swimming with notes of nuts and chocolate; it is drinkable, so drinkable that it is almost as if pint after pint were drinking itself; and it packs a punch, so much so that its drinkability rapidly gives way to a euphoric intoxication that only a true Porter drinker can understand. Malts: 2-row pale, 30-37 l. Crystal, 70-80 l. Crystal, Chocolate. Hops: Cluster, Cascade, Willamette.

Sampled on 10/9/2012. This porter pours a dark black color from a 12oz bottle. Small to medium sized off-white foamy head. The aroma is roasty malt, chocolate and slightly sweet. A medium bodied porter. The malts are roasty and coffee, fruity and sweet. The hops are herbal and earthy. Decent carbonation. There are some brown sugar and molasses flavors as well. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish Is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly roasty and sweet.

This brew is a dark brown color with ruby highlights and a medium beige head that recedes steadily to an outer ring. Short strings of lace on the glass. Roasted malt and chocolate in the nose. Medium body with flavors of sweet malt, chocolate and coffee. The finish is sweet with a roasty malt aftertaste. Decent overall.

Chocolate is the most prominent taste in this beer, with hints of brown sugar. Mouthfeel was one of the nicest things about this porter.

This has got to be one of the better, if not best of the, beers from Santa Fe. It has a silky black color that has slight hues of dark brown beneath a dense, medium brown head that maintains a thin, but strong, head over time. Its aroma is of a well-balanced, but potent, mix of chocolate and roasted malts that smells like fresh malted grains. Strong in the nose, but very nice with no off-notes or over-roastedness. In the mouth itís a great feel. Not too thick and not too thin with a lively character that delivers light-to-moderately roasted flavors and a hint of chocolate very nicely. A whisper of earthy hops peeks through after a half a glass, making for a little hop bitterness that joins a soft roasted malt bitterness in the finish. A warmth, maybe thanks to slight malt sweetness and roasted malt bitterness, settles in the center of the tongue after every drink. The chocolate and a slight sweetness entertains the taste buds as the glass is quickly emptied. A bubbly, light brown lacing sticks to the entire length of the glass. Itís enjoyable, soft, and easy to drink with a body thatís just right for what it has to deliver. Lively for a porter, and not over-roasted or decorated.

Bottle. Nose of coco and roasted malts. Poured a dark brown, almost black color with a kakhai head. Strong coffee taste, followed by chocolate and other malts. Lingering coffee on the palate. Overall, very robust, just too overpowering on the coffee/dark chocolate for this style IMO. Cheers
