A trademark beer of the Santa Fe Brewing Company’s master brewer, Ty Levis, the State Pen Porter has every reason to be one of his favorites. It is flavorful, swimming with notes of nuts and chocolate; it is drinkable, so drinkable that it is almost as if pint after pint were drinking itself; and it packs a punch, so much so that its drinkability rapidly gives way to a euphoric intoxication that only a true Porter drinker can understand. Malts: 2-row pale, 30-37 l. Crystal, 70-80 l. Crystal, Chocolate. Hops: Cluster, Cascade, Willamette.

Bottle. Nose of coco and roasted malts. Poured a dark brown, almost black color with a kakhai head. Strong coffee taste, followed by chocolate and other malts. Lingering coffee on the palate. Overall, very robust, just too overpowering on the coffee/dark chocolate for this style IMO. Cheers

12 oz bottle. Pours jet black and opaque with a light tan head that sticks around. Aroma of roast, chocolate, and nuts. Very roasty, lightly hoppy, full-bodied. I’ve had imperial stouts with less body than this brew. A damn good porter.

Bottle pours very dark brown with thick beige head. Aroma caramel malts/roasts. Taste caramel, slight chocolate, roast. Palate on the thin side. Finish prolonged mild roast. Alcohol not apparent.

Not a bad porter, kind of average.

Originally reviewed: 3/30/11. 12oz bottle, poured into a pint glass. Pours a dark black with light garnet on the edges. Small tan head. No lace. The nose is pretty basic: faint coffee aromas, roasted malts, mild leafy hops on the finish. Good moderate body. Carbonation level melds with a creamy feel to liven it up a bit. This beer starts out with a bounty of roasted goodness. Some coffee, mild nuttiness, dark bitter chocolate. But on the finish there’s a really flavorful hop presence that caused me to double-take. Wasn’t expecting that, but it is much appreciated. This wouldn’t be confused with a Black IPA, but it’s close. Nice juicy hops that jive well with the roasted aspect. I dig this. I’d love the chance to try it again.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a tan head leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is roasted malt and chocolate. Thin mouthfeel with a sweet raisin and a nice lingering dry finish. A decent porter from Santa Fe.

When cold this beer is fairly one dimensional - nose is all malt, with a bit of roast and chocolate in the flavor. It’s a deep clear brown with off-white head that foams up then leaves sticky lacing behind. Palate is very nice - medium bodied and creamy. Refreshing and well crafted porter. Once it warms up it gets substantially better - chocolate, smoke, roast, and a bit of nuttiness all show up in the nose and taste.
